You don’t need a “proven PL striker” imo. We can sign a similar high calibre talent to what we already have but upfront. There strikers out there in our price range that have scored a fair few goals in other leagues and have a lot of upside.

Franjo Ivanovic - 16 goals for USG

Promise David - 19 goals for USG

Tolu Arokodare - 21 goals for Genk

Evan Guessand - 13 goals for OGC Nice

Matthis Abline - 9 goals for Nantes

Just a few that I think would be smart signings upfront that would well have the ability to score a good amount in the PL

3 teams stayed up scoring less than 50 last year.

Defence is key to staying up for sure.
Yes,but there were three very poor scoring teams below them, which ultimately saved them. Even teams well clear of the bottom 3 needed 50+ goals...eg Fulham,Palace, who both conceded as many as they scored. Of course you need to keep it tight at the back, but we can't lose every match 1-0.

The midfield is a big factor in how many goals we score and we look strong there.

I’d be surprised if our top scorer scores more than 12 or so, but I can see Diarra, Enzo and the wingers getting a few too.

Either way you can’t go and sign a striker who’s already scored 20 goals in this league.

Look at foreign leagues like we have been doing. Also, there’s no evidence Mayenda and Isidor can’t step up. But I do think we need to bring in another of a similar calibre to what we have even signing in other positions

Ok,if we have a top scorer with 12,and we accept the 50 goal as a target( subjective,I know),that would leave Diarra,Enzo and a couple of others to get 10 goals each. Not beyond reason,I get that, but it's an ask. As @CR17 has mentioned,I'm not expecting to sign someone who's already bagged 20 goals in the PL, but, imo,we need someone who's capable of it ,having done it at a decent level somewhere.

Great post. Like you at the start of the summer I wasnt keen on loads of new players. The club are doing it differently to my preference, and that is great, they know much more than me. I think they will be spending more based on activity to date.

My preference right now is to focus on CB and CF. Assuming Xhaka lands. One of the real bright spots so far in pre season has been Seelt and Huggins. Seelt I thought the other night looked the part. I know judging players in pre season can be dangerous but he just moved like a quality CB. Him, Ballard, ONien and Alese make me think just one more will do. But I want whoever it is to be a real level up. Reimaldo can also play there in an emergency. Will leave the club to work out who but I wouldnt mind some English lads personally. I had thought we would need cover for Hume but happy now to trust in Huggins through to later in the window.

Centre forward feels huge to me. Mayenda is so talented and he deserves to get his chance. I dont fancy Isidor though. I just think centre back will find him easy to play against and in a game where we are likely to need every second of possession he cant keep hold of the thing well enough. We really need someone that can help gel that forward play together. Back to goal they need to be elite. Little wall passes from the wide players to start moving defences around. Going to need to be a strong lad with great touch. Over to the club again. If they are reading Morata and Lauturo are canny at this job <laugh>

On top of that I would bring in a keeper to push Patto. The coach appointment I think is massive here. I dont mind a Sam Johnstone type personally. If we could really land Ramsdale I would be very happy too.

I dont think that leaves us far away. One thing I am quite confident in is that Regis isnt about to become Ranieri. He wont suddenly rotate his first team in any significant way. I just dont see that in his coaching mentality. He is so focussed on connections and little triangles. Which I am all for. This means the idea of having lots of quality in depth to me is unrealistic. Footballers do not want to sit on the bench. It drives frustration and other poor mindsets. And as a coach you cant really keep good players and not play them. They career is short and they need to build achievements. I dont think we can expect too many in the squad as a result that have been used to playing week in week out and now expect them to be cover. Lads coming in like Tabli might accept it to start with. Seelt, Alese and Huggins will at the start too. But if you have played the games Patto, Cirkin, Rigg, Roberts etc have I would be surprised if all are happy starting the season on the bench. I look at footballers who are subs week in week out and think where is your motivation coming from. The game is everything, it is everything you work for. I could never have been a regular sub, even in lowly non-league. It would have driven my mad. Just think we may need to moderate our thinking a little about how much the club will want a deep squad, versus how much players want to be only a squad member.

This is where we're all getting used to the idea of the nationality of our signings.

I'd also like 'English' players but the two you mention as possible signings, Morata and Lauturo, demonstrate the difficulty.

When we were promoted I had a vision of the squad identity I wanted but that's gone out of the window now, in fact it's totally left the building.

I'm not even trying to second guess the club now ...

... Speakman, KLD, Ghisolfi, etc, are like a hit squad scything through a pre-prepared list of targets.

The only vagaries, in my mind, are the loans and I can see them being very late in the window.

Of the '50 goals' we'll need I wonder how many will be down to set piece situations like free kicks and corners <whistle>

No,there's no evidence they can't step up,but neither is there any evidence they're prolific.

Yeah we’d like to sign someone who’s capable of that, won’t argue that.

Isn’t Mayenda though? He’s unpolished at times but so would any striker we bring from a weaker league.

I absolutely agree I’d like to see one in, it’s a tough position to sign though especially newly promoted, and someone who’s scored 25 in Holland or whatever can really go either way.

A lot of the best scorers the league has seen hasn’t really shown signs of it prior to hitting PL.

Henry, top of my head, prime example.

I believe that we'll need to score at least 50 goals in order to stay safe of the drop zone......it would give us a real chance. We might have 4 or 5 players who could get 7 or 8 each, but it won't be enough.
Everton only got 42. Palace got 51 and I think last season was reasonably high scoring. 50 goals should be comfortable survival.
