What I find interesting is that the fee that keeps being quoted by the Dortmund sources of €25m would keep him below their record transfer fee. I think the optics of their record fee being a player who's only played in the Championship are playing a factor here.

why not? The release clause is just the maximum we can sell for. We can accept lower bids if it’s the right deal for the club
Glad we’re doing this.

if they want him, give us the money or money plus player to take it over 40m

but we also don’t want to be publicly seen to be blocking players making champions league moves when we’re positioning ourselves as a club that develop young talent
I don’t think we are, though. The release clause is what it is. We said we’d let him go cheaper if we didn’t go up, but we did. They can’t expect to get the move done at the discount. Given we’re willing to accept part of the money on the never never I don’t think the lad can complain too much.

I think there’s already an element that they only paid 20m euro for Jude which was not really that long ago in the big scheme of things. Paying double for Jobe perhaps sets the wrong expectations

Someone correct me if i'm wrong here but would selling him after June be better for our PSR numbers for the upcoming season? Maybe that's why we're demanding the release clause right now because it wouldn’t help us as much.

That actually makes sense…

Looking at reports from the time it was described as an initial fee of £25m. So 5 years ago for a less developed (albeit probably more promising) 17 year old they were willing to pay an initial 28m euro. With inflation that’s actually more than the total value of Jobe’s release clause

edit: no not isn’t. My maths is ****. Still more than they’re currently offering though!

I wondered about that but according to a thread OTR they take a rolling three year regardless of league. So we’d just have a profitable 24/25 to go into the calc.

He does yeah, just been a bit of a cock about our fans and a few other things

a Birmingham fan I know was adamant that Mark Bellingham was furiously telling Birmingham that Jobe had to start every game otherwise he’d take him somewhere else. They told him to get stuffed and hence selling to us.

It’s why I always did actually buy into the conspiracy theory that we were intentionally playing Jobe every game even when he was looking tired. I don’t think it was ever contractual - just a gentleman’s agreement.

this is what I meant the other day when I said Jobe and his carefully orchestrated camp was great for us when they wanted him here, but as soon as they decide he needs to be elsewhere, there could be all sorts of funny business going on.

I've seen a few things on social media where it's been said that the club don't want Jobe to go ( and who would?) but has Jobe said something behind the scenes? If it is his parents pushing this move rather than him, could the club be pushing the price up so Dortmund don't want to pay it and he stays? The one thing that keeps niggling me is that Jobe came out and said he wants to be his own player and not compared with his brother - going to Dortmund will not afford him that

I'm fully behind the club no matter what the reason, Jobe is our player, if you want him, this is what you have to pay

Cares about his lads, nasty piece of work away from that though. Pretty negative and stuck up about the people of Sunderland (allegedly).

I don’t necessarily begrudge the family wanting him out of the PL. I can see the logic in keeping him out of such a potentially toxic environment. However, there was a champ price and there’s a release clause. If Dortmund really want him they’ll get to the right number. If they can’t get there, are they really serious about the lad?
I mean more about the way he goes on rather than that

Think he’s got his son’s best interests at heart, whether we agree with it or not. Don’t think he’s a bellend for that.
But he is if he expects the club to lose ten million in a competitive environment to a cash rich club because they are the Bellendinghams. I like the pair of them but their dad needs a reality check if he thinks that is fair. For the record I don’t think it’s the case, but if it is … we’re not forcing him to stay, just forcing them to pay.
