I was told (i know i know) that there's not an issue with wages or at least not enough that either party walks away from the table.Been getting more and more nervous about Neil. I think he is more than good enough to hold his own as our captain next season. And for all the exitement of new players coming in, a Jobe and Neil size hole is massive. Not just in footballing terms but in the team spirit and morale etc. I really dont think we can afford to lose a captain in season one.
I hope it is just a few details they are haggling over, like release clause or signing on fee etc. If they are miles apart of salary I would have real concerns. I have said before you cant have someone like Neil miles off someone like Le Fee or Habib in salary terms. I understand market forces, and you have to pay to sign players I just think you have to pay to keep them too. If Neil is available he will have suitors and his pay will jump big time, it seems that is how the game works these days. In my mind we cant pay players lots more just because we had to sign them for big fees. If the club value Neil, and I am 100% certain Regis does, I hope he gets the salary level others do.
All said and done, if they cant agree then so be it. Better to get a fee now I suppose, and let him leave for a decent price. He has already been a hell of a player in our rise back from the lowest ebb. Premier league promotion captain will always be remembered.
Sounds like he might be wanting a new challenge which would be ashame as I want to see him leading the side out at the start of the season (and hopefully does enough to keep his place).
The wage situation is always a tough one to balance, each player will have a figure they want and the club will have a figure they want to pay - hopefully it'll align for us and Neil
When players arrive with bigger fees, with international and top flight experience they'll naturally get more money. The key is making sure the other players get what they deserve, that doesn't mean the same or similar amount tho
I really want Neil to stay
I do have some concerns about him stepping up as I thought he had quite a few periods last aeason where he was poor however, I think he will be so much better having a yrs experience of the new role and working with RLB
