I am with you mate. Plenty of good players down the years come to us from them and vice versa. I have no issue with it, and our recruitment team now do all the savvy checks on personality etc, so we would only sign those with the mentality.

Other than She-ra, I cannot think of a mag (not just none supporting mags who have been bribed to play for them, they are a different kettle of fish) who i would have accepted playing for us as there would always have been better options.

Gazza?

I'm not a fan of signing a) dyed-in the wool Newcastle fans (the Longstaff brothers are absolutely this), nor b) signing player directly from Newcastle.
Patterson is from North Shields. It's highly likely that he's a mag. Lee Clark is still one of my favourite players in a Sunderland shirt. He was terrific.

I'm not against signing a player from them if he's going to improve us.

Patterson has been at the club since he was a bairn, any Newcastle allegiance will have been long gone
We ALL know how it ended with Clark - he'd already handed in a transfer request by the time of the shirt incident

He helped improve our league position/division before that, Hutchison was good the season he was here, Colback had his best years here and a derby win. All ended with a skirmish but if they get us up a division to our rightful place and a win against the mags I don’t care if they wear NUfC underpants. I just want better players and league wins.

We didn't sign Hutchison (who isn't really a Newcastle fan although his family are) from Newcastle, and he'd never played for them. Colback was ours and suddenly became a "massive toon fan" when he signed for them (despite trying to get out of that same contract when West Ham offered him more money)

Other than Clark and Chopra, the only other NUFC fan I can remember us signing is Danny Graham and he was......well, just ****e

I take your point, but I think if we ever want to get back to competing with the mags, then signing mags isn't the way to do it. It maybe be short sighted, it may be parochial but I just think it's a terrible idea

I’m sure where ****e signings go we could find many from every region and nationality !! There have been plenty.

Absolutely. Let's be clear, if we were able to sign a player from them who would help us get promoted then so be it. I would just find it hard to accept him based on previous experiences

I might go back a bit. Pop Robson started with them, and he was some player for us. I loved Waddle here, even for a short time. Paul Bracewell came back to us from them. Despite how it ended Lee Clark was a very good player for Reidy. I seem to remember Stephen Caldwell played for them before being part of a championship side for us. My old man says Shack was the best and we got him from them.

Plenty have gone the other way as well. Jeff Clarke, Vennison, Bracewell etc.

I appreciate these arent all local lads, but they crossed between clubs with a fair bit of success.

Yeah Clark was set-up and give 100% to the club when he was on the pitch. What's wrong with that?

If I went to Newcastle as a kid, I'd still always be a Sunderland supporter. That's just the way it is.

Moncur, and of course Guthrie and Young , a few years back, last two signed by arch Mag Bob Stokoe, they were fine imo. But I agree with you in principal avoid if possible would be my advice, strangely the ones that go the other way all do well, even Colback secured his future financially with the deal he got, although it too left a bitter taste, but it was self inflicted.
