Say what you like about Norwich and Swansea, they're not getting any better. You're right that they survived largely on spirit last season, but where do they go from here? They can start buying some top players or they can start slipping back down. Blackburn went down because they're an absolute shambles.

But we have the funds to keep inproving our squad. I'm just saying it isn't that important to get Premier League experience. Others weaker than us have survived.

I'd love to believe he's a realistic target but he'd cost a bomb and could easily join a team better than us.

Thats exactly the type of player I am thinking about. Yes would cost a lot and could easily join a better team but that is what Cortese has been doing for the last few years. Spending money and persuading those sorts of players to join. Fonte dropped down a league when he could have gone up one for example.

For all we know these sort of transfers maybe in the pipe line and are taking longer than others or some of the Spain team are yet to return from their holidays!

I just don't see it as a possibility, he'd likely cost around £20m and if he was available would surely be off to somewhere like United.

"Everything is organised, everything is done and he could play at the weekend.

"He has got a little injury, he is recovering from one that he got last season at Rangers, but he is running around, kicking a football on the training ground.

"We won't risk him at the weekend, we'll make sure he is right, but he is 100 per cent a Southampton player and if he is fit, he could play tomorrow (Saturday)."

Sky Sports making there own version of the interview.

Regarding Clyne I have one probably overly pessimistic concern. Doesn't anyone else find it odd that over the past 12-18 months everyone has been raving about what a top prospect he is, media reporting that virtually every big club in the land has been watching him extensively, rumours of large bids coming in etc. Now he is (supposedly) available for what is in effect peanuts, and it appears we are the only team who has even got close to signing him?

As I say it probably is just me being my usual pessimistic self but I just find it odd that if the £1.5 mil figure is in the right ball park then there aren't more teams battling it out for the player as that kind of figure for a young English player with supposed potential is absolutely nothing to all the Prem teams.

Maybe there are/were and we have just got to the front of them all in Clyne's estimations

I'm not saying about the fee being low, I know why that is. I'm saying that BECAUSE the fee is low, it seems surprising that more clubs seem to be not showing much interest

maybe there are/were but we are the front runners

Jack Cork was available for £750k and we were the only team officially in for him

Thought there were more, but we were the only ones who were given permission to speak to him.

Which means nobody else matched the price of £750k :p

I do find it interesting at just how many of us (and I don't just mean people on here) appear to go to Palace matches on a regular basis. I mean, so people already appear to have formed an opinion on him - especially with regards to whether or not he's a better option than Richardson.

I've always thought that the quality of a full-back (from a defensive side to their game) is the hardest position to judge, without seeing them with your own eyes on a regular basis. It's all well and good being able to judge them going forward or how quick they are - I'd imagine that anyone can watch a few matches on Sky and realise that Micah Richards can be pretty darn decent bombing forward, for example - but what are they really like defensively? Positioning, aeiral ability, tackling, communication, marking etc.

And in fact, even when you go to games on a regular basis, I don't think it's always easy to judge unless maybe you're keeping a specific eye out on a particular full-back. For example, I didn't immediately notice how poor Harding was defensively. But after spotting one or two slight errors in his game, I started studying him closely every match - and it was soon plainly obviously how bad he was/is defensively.

I've got no idea how good Clyne is defensively. If Nigel wants to sign him great, fantastic. I'll support Nigel and Nicola on that one. But I'm not suddenly going to start saying how much I want us to sign him, or that he'd slot straight in ahead of Richardson etc. I just don't know, having not gone to Selhurst Park regularly.

Saw Palace 3 times last season, each time i thought he was a stand out player for them. Am a little Skeptical about his height against teams such as West Hoof! But attacking wise a great signing and has pace so like yourself i shall reserve further judgement <ok>
