Just one other point on the midfielder issue. Considering we defend in a 4-4-2 shape there's now less need, IMO, in a strong destoryer type defensive midfielder. We don't play with that role. We defend with two in the middle rather than one.

Arguably the player we don't have a back up for is Neil. So we need somebody with a similar profile to him.
Browne, Jobe and Rigg have the more advanced positions covered but I'm not confident of them covering the role Neil is doing (maybe Browne will prove me wrong at the weekend). So yeah so one comfortable playing deeper would be the best replacement for Ekwah. I'd keep Aouchiche though, I like having the option to go with a number 10 when things aren't going to plan and we need a goal.

Yeah probably a part of my skewed view of what I want from SAFC. I tend towards player development even over 'win now' moves. Defo realise that I'm in a boat on my own on that one though:emoticon-0102-bigsm
Nah I get that mate but I think last summer the club went down that route and kind of ignored the here and now. If we're too bring players in they have to be of a higher quality than what's here obviously with certain exceptions as we're not going to replace Clarke like for like or with a better player

I think Browne will be able to do a good job in that role. In fact as he gets older he may only do that role. (I mean in a couple of years).

I'd still be keen to see Triantis in the role. Was a shame he missed the league cup game.

My gut tells me we get no movement on any striker until Thursday, then it will all kick off and we'll get 2 out of the 3 both announced Friday.

Simic for me remains the priority. So I don't think we should be doing anything that counts us out of signing him whilst he's still an option.

I dont want it to drag on till Friday, things could fall through and youre left little time for a replacement terms/medical etc. get done by thursday.

It still ends up being a challenge to find the right one, though. Spend £4m on a more natural 6 and that comes with expectation to play legit first choice minutes. That doesn't really work for us right now. Or we bring in a young talent to acclimatise and then we run the risk of having parked that money somewhere where it won't impact us in 24/25. Meanwhile we know that Ekwah is capable of dominating at this level (I disagree that he has no role in the current team btw - he can develop as either 6 or 8 IMO) and he's young enough to have plenty of room to grow. Guess it all depends on if he is willing to bide his time. Don't love the idea of kicking the can down the road just 'because', though. And I maintain that the negativity around Ekwah is divorced from the reality of what he's produced in red and white - even accounting for a drop-off last season.
Definitely a player in there.would need to be prepared to double his work rate off the ball tho

See I don't mind that at all, if we can improve the side then we do it. It raises the level and quality.

Agree. We should be signing players to improve the team continually not standing still and waiting for players to develop. Before you know if you’ve missed out on promotion another 2 years in a row and half our Xl have moved onto better things.

Not many clubs in the championship could turn down 6-7 million for their 5th choice CM. I like Ekwah n think theres a cracking player there but I also know that he might not fit into RLBs system. I dont think he has the aggression needed with his pressing to play this system of football and therefore if selling him brings in a CM that fits the system better we would be stupid not to do it (imo)

Hopefully be a busy few days as strengthen the squad n bringing in more firepower is keen for us to keep kicking on
Agree with this, Roberts’ work rate seems to be on another level to what it was last season.
so if Robert’s can do it maybe Ekwah can get with the program.

The sell on percentages dont bother me, its what we had to do to secure some of the talents at sensible values, no doubt we will be adding the same clauses into any deals we may do. Its the way it seems to be done now for most clubs when they sell younger players.

We just havent had any to sell for a few seasons.

The sell on fees shouldn't really be considered in how much we sell for. They're just deferred payments against how much we paid for the player.

We can't expect clubs to pay extra just because we owe other clubs money from it. The market value is the market value.
Agreed, although it does change the calculus on whether the deal is in our benefit. Does shifting Ekwah on make sense if it provides us with £2.7m to strengthen the squad on his departure?
