I'd read that we had supposedly bid for another striker before Mendy, but not the £2.5 million bit. Ugbo's name has been mentioned and I think he's likely to have been the player. Snippet from a report below:

..... (Michael) Graham has now revealed that Sunderland have lodged another bid for a striker, and that it’s not Mendy.

Graham says that Sunderland made a £2.5million bid for a different striker ‘earlier this month’.

Who the striker is remains to be seen, and whether it’s the unnamed striker who played in the Championship last season also remains to be seen.

But it appears as though Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is willing to spend money on the right striker this summer.

(From Twitter below)

"There were also reports saying he wasn’t, though. I have no information at all on Mendy, but I do know Sunderland made a £2.5m bid for another striker earlier this month, so certainly looks like they’re okay with spending a bit. [HASHTAG]#SAFC[/HASHTAG]https://t.co/hxM8Zh9J83

That was about Armstrong who went to Bristol

Find it hard to believe it would be Armstrong who would be in the same bracket as Mayenda and Hemir in that they're young talents who haven't got going yet. In this respect, the Mendy or Ugbo links are better and actually compliment the younger lads we already have.
I think it’s true

"Unknown striker" who we bid "£2.5m" for who played in the Championship might have been Kiefer Moore, who signed for Sheff Utd.

Think he has turned us down maybe twice before and we know his wage demands are pretty high, don't see it as a very us signing at the moment.

I heard we had bidded similar for Armstrong just before he went ti Bristol so I think it’s him

30 year old 6ft 4 striker who scored 22 goals in 2.Bundesliga last season and 17 for Austria Wein the year before? I can't imagine we'd be getting him from Hertha at a cheap price.

I think one of the first leaks on the Mendy transfer mentioned a Saudi team bidding 500k and us bidding less than a million. Now we're seeing 3-4m fees bandied about, wondering if this has stalled due to the difference in valuation.

I wonder if we want to push ahead with other targets?

Like Speakman said, we've probably got a few irons in the fire, this is good news because it means we won't be held to ransom, we still have time before the season starts as well so right now everything is good, even though I know fans want their dopamine hits asap.

Glad the club didn’t go any further with Sinclair Armstrong he looked f*cking turd. Just a big handful. This squad is too technical to be having a big lump who couldn’t kick my arse up front. Watch me eat my words in 9 months when he’s scored 20 goals for Bristol City :emoticon-0102-bigsm
