Despite those reports, however, sources in Spain have denied suggestions a deal to bring Mendy to the Stadium of Light is close, with the 30-year-old only a player of interest at this stage.

Mendy still has two-years remaining on his contract with Caen which means Sunderland will need to come up with a financial package to suit the Ligue 2 side if they are to extend their interest in the 30-Year-old.
I’ve spent part of the morning reading the Caen forum (yes, I’m that sad) and they seem to think the two years remaining on his contract is/may be one year plus a one year player option a la MBappe which the player obviously won’t take so he’s effectively in the last year of his contract.

That and his statement doesn’t give them much wriggle room does it? Balls firmly in our court

I can imagine what’s happened is Phil Smith has half read what the French guy reported and wandered over to Speakman (it was during the game) and incorrectly asked “reports in France say a deal with Mendy is imminent, any comment?”. And Speakman has quite rightly said “no it’s not imminent, he’s one of a number of options”.

I read absolutely nothing into it. Everything adds up and nothing is conflicting. The only person who’s suggested a deal would be imminent is Smith in his denial of its imminence. Nobody else has said it’s imminent.

Imminent is the new literally. It means what it always meant, the opposite of what it always meant and every possible iteration in between.

It's why I can say with confidence that the Alexandre Mendy transfer is literally imminent. <laugh>

Think we’ll see a scarf pic on tues/wed for Mendy. Quite similar to how the Mayenda deal played out.

also expect us to sign a few players that aren’t immediately for the first eleven. Maybe the Chilean kid we’ve been linked with.

Hoying some serious coin at it, all depends on the attitude of these players, league one isn’t the place for mercanaries

Im getting Ipswich vibes. I thought their fans were overconfident as well. Could see Birmingham double promoting. But could also see them sacking this new manager in November

Their fans are slightly insufferable thinking they’re going to walk the league but some of Birminghams signings have been very impressive. I think it’s fair to say we’d all be very happy if we’d signed this guy

Made some serious signings and thankfully have taken the League One record transfer away from us. It's all about how they react to Shrewsbury and teams like that camping 11 men in their own box and the games having about 20 minutes of ball in play time. Crazy league.

I’m getting us under Jack Ross vibes haha, should walk it but can see them getting a reality check, inexperience coach too, still wouldn’t be shocked if they ran away with it like
