Only having two out and out strikers is clearly a bit light. The club obviously know this hence the targeting of Davis. It's a shame that didn't happen and we didn't have time to do something else.

But comparing the squad now to last season is night and day. We have balanced, quality options in all positions. The big one that needed sorting was out wide. Last season for the majority of the time we had Longman, Tufan, Oscar and then a load of midfield graters making up the numbers. Allahyar, Traore and Tetteh were constantly injured, and Vaughan once he broke through immediately became our best winger, which says a lot. When Traore got fit again he was a standout star player. Now Longman isn't needed, Vaughan is way down the pecking order, Allahyar is fit but has sort of become forgotten when last year we were desperate for him, and Traore is still good but shoved out wide because we have so many players in his position now. So for those forward positions we now have Delap, Connelly, Twine, Tufan, Traore, Philogene, Vaughan, Allahyar, which is probably four or five quality players ahead of the options we had for most of last season. Yes it'd be nice to complete it with another out and out striker, but I can't ever remember a time when we've had a perfect squad with no gaps in it.

God I forgot about Lokilo in that list as well.

It's quite difficult to pick a strongest XI now, which is a good sign in itself. Based on how Liam has us playing in the first few games I wonder if the plan is something like this:

Flat 442 when defending, then switching to a 352 when in possession. Playing Twine in front of a very attacking fullback in Vinagre should allow him to drift inside and play more centrally. Whilst the pacey Philogene can stay high and wide on the other side. Christie has said himself he feels his best position is the right of a back 3 and playing this way allows him to do so. Would be harsh to drop Coyle but i'm not sure he can play the inverted role.

The bench will still have the likes of Morton, Traore, Tufan, Lokilo, Ally, Vaughan maybe even Sinik on it. So it's not like we're short of quality.

So one of our best players this season in Coyle is nowhere to be seen?

You had him in your second XI as well.

As PLT said, clearly it was something we wanted to replace or we wouldn't have pursued Davis.
We wanted Davis who was the total opposite of Oscar, great in possession and linking play but not a great goal scorer. Oscar was never going to play in this team, hence why he’s gone.

If Turkey's window doesn't close for another two weeks, then we can say goodbye to Sinik.
A shame as I think he has the potential to make the same impact as Tufan.

I don't think that's a given. The mystery player we didn't get was a winger so I'd expect at leat 1 of Ali or Sinik to stay.

Not sure I'd call him the complete opposite, and not sure what we've brought in is similar to Davis anyway, so regardless of what you're trying to say about Oscar, surely you acknowledge we're light up top from where we wanted to be.

If we’re going to play a system that allows the fullback to be the extra man and free a lot of the time I’d rather that be Vinagre then Coyle as I feel he offers more attacking threat. Coyle can and has been playing that role but it requires Greaves to start at left back.

Sinik is as good as a new signing if he returns to our team. He’s clearly capable of much more than we have ever seen in his very limited minutes in a city shirt when coming back from a long injury and no pre season.

Injury record over the last 12 months is very concerning though. Perma-injured.

I once picked up an XR2i from someone I knew, 1 lady owner from new, 90k on the clock, for £150 with tax and mot.

Sold it a week later for £650 because my mum moaned about it being on the drive.

Just because I quadrupled my money didn’t make it a good choice.

No, but it's not disastrous business either.

They’re opposites. Davis suits our playing style, Oscar doesn’t.

Im not that worried about him going because I don’t think he’d play much anyway, and if he did it would be off the bench with not much success.

We’re light if you’re looking for a poacher but we don’t play like that so what is there to miss?

Connolly isn't really a hold up player. If we lose Delap then we have no one really for a role with back to goal that seems key to the way we play.

Maybe we'll adjust as we did last season but I'd rather we had a 3rd striker, especially with Connolly's availability record currently.

I know Allahyar signed as a 9, and we have Tufan and Twine as false 9s, Traore as a 10 so we have options, but that more traditional 9 role seems to have been pivotal to Rosenior style when we've had one available.

What is there to miss? I guess what we were looking for Davis to provide?
