There are only 7 teams above limit out of 19 and 3 of them at 15 players, so it is not that much. It is not strange though, I don't want to deep dive into shady parts much since it will be off topic, but lately Adil Rami (former Fenerbahce player around 18-19) claimed that Fenerbahce manager was selecting players who has Turkish agents so that he can get a share. Of course since he could not provide a proof, matter is closed but you can guess what is happening behind for most of the transfers, it is a good way to generate money and may be launder, who knows, most of Turkish clubs are not paying their taxes and their taxes got erased by government periodically after they fail to pay. As a company if you sponsor a club, you can reduce it from taxes like %100. So it is a shady business, things get darker with a few government backed clubs like Basaksehir, Trabzon, but that's an another territory I don't want to discuss here. I will just put some links below:

Mmmm

£5m bid for greaves rejected as we know.... I think anything north of £8m might test us. From his POV I really don't see why he would want to move sideways
Money mate, at the end of the day it’s what we all go to work for, footballers are rarely different.

His dad was at our place today, he told me that Jacob wants to stay at City but the money that Boro are offering is a lot, lot more. I guess we’ll soon see, this month anyway, how much Acun wants to keep him here. If a new contract isn’t signed prior to September 1st I think it’s a safe bet that he’ll be gone in January at the latest.

They obviously can't afford to pay what they're 'offering' him as well as an acceptable fee. They will have a budget for the total value of the transfer - the lower the transfer fee, the more they can offer in wages. Maybe they'd be able to offer an 8m fee instead of a 5m fee if they 'offered' Greaves 20k a week less over a 3 year contract. Wonder if they would be 'offering' Greaves significantly more under that scenario?

Not doubting anything you’ve said there LBIA and my understanding of the rules might be outdated, naive or both, but I thought that for a club to be allowed to discuss terms with a player they want to buy, or their reps, they would need the consent of the selling club.

So, from this are we to presume that the club have given permission for Boro to talk to Greaves, whilst they agree a fee, or they’re tapping him up or…?

Bit naive if you think tapping up isn't commonplace. Conversations happen and fees are suggested off the record. Parent clubs often even accept it as establishing market value - that and they're likely doing the same thing themselves.

Or he could sit tight, run down his contract, move on May be in 2 years, get a signing on fee and potentially be better off financially.

Hence why I mentioned it in my post. I suppose in the days of Zoom, Teams and video calls, it's even easier. But it's still verboten.

As Greaves' dad was openly telling people about the offer, I wondered if Jacob maybe had the Club's permission to speak to Boro.

I think with Greaves, if we keep him for a year on his current contract, he could easily be a more valuable player this time next year, and even factoring in the lost value of him being in his final year, we could still be looking at getting 5m for him then.

I don't see how it's in the clubs interest to sell now at 5m.

They're just using the figure as a bargaining chip. Any club could 'offer' whatever they like but it's moot if they can't pay the transfer valuation as well.

Agree, but we don't have to, not with 2 years to run on his contract

Makes sense. I suppose a lot's elapsed since I took a detailed interest in the workings of such and such.
