He's still a good player. But I assume the wages are well over the top and they have given him a four year deal when it should have been a three year deal at the most. When he is 34 that is going to look terrible. But for this season it might actually work out ok. Certainly makes their midfield to play us much better than it was shaping up to be...

And a five-year contract with a salary which makes him the second-highest earner at the club, behind only Ronaldo. Great work.

I'm as big a proponent of the importance of a quality DM as you'll find, but that's pure madness.

I genuinely don't know how that squad should be set up, either. Pressing didn't work too well last year, though sans Pogba and Ronaldo (if they can ditch him) they perhaps have better personnel for it, though it'd require buy-in. You could maybe squint and see them playing a 2008 era Real Madrid counter, but their lack of height would play against them. Their players aren't really suited to dominating possession a la City. They got very little from their non-Ronaldo forwards last year, and yet the only forward who scored goals was an utter net negative because he wouldn't contribute in any phase of the game beyond attempting to score.

It's genuinely impressive to spend that much and end up with a group of players as tactically incoherent as theirs.

Vertonghen was too slow for the PL three years ago; I shudder to think of him in a high line now. Leadership qualities are great, but not if you're an utter liability, and we shouldn't be contemplating sticking with a formation that doesn't suit our team in order to shoehorn him in.

We could have Vertonghen as one of our five substitutes, giving out orders from the sidelines. That way, we'd utilise his leadership qualities, without ever needing him to actually play.

I'm not saying the Casemiro deal is a good one, especially with the rumoured fees, but signing a 30 year old isn't much of an issue anymore.

Players these days can and will play at high levels until their mid to late 30s. De Bruyne and Van Dijk for example are both 31, and any of the world's biggest clubs would want them in their team for the next four or five years. Modric is another example, he's nearing the end of his career at 36 (soon to be 37), but the last six years have been some of the best of his career.

Again, don't think this particular move is what United need, but not because of age.

If there’s one thing more irritating than puns, it’s “influence in the dressing room” jokes. I feel like throwing a metaphorical boot at the head of the next person to crack one.
Agreed, unfunny and not to be continued, to bloody cheesy.
