Bale would effectively be like repeating the Walcott deal imo. Hasn’t been that interested in club football for a while now and if you can’t be interested at Real Madrid you aren’t going to be interested at Southampton
I get the idea here but it isnt that simple. At Madrid he should have been a club legend and instead he was constantly whislted and jeered by fans. He would be loved here so it may be different.

Also, some have said he isnt the player he was. Which is of course true, but we are competing for 10th in the Premier League, up against Palace & Villa. We aren't competing to win the Champions league 5 times in 9 years. He doesnt need to be as good as he was.

When was his loan spell at Spurs? 2 years ago now? He looked finished then tbh, I just don’t think he has the desire to be training/playing day in day out. He’s had a fantastic career obviously and maybe he is looking for one last contract with a club he has a connection with (hence the links to us and Cardiff) but I don’t think it will be a good move for us bar the sentimental reasons, and training room influence before you know who says it

All fair points and I completely agree there is a chance he is past it now. But I think it would b every low risk. Obviously there would be no fee, it would just be a 1 year deal (maybe even 6 months to take him to the world cup) and if he would be joining us or Cardiff he clearly wouldn't be doing it for the money so might not be that expensive in wages.

I don't think it will happen, but the romantic in me can't help but think it would be a fitting end to an incredible career and he might just still have some magic about him.

Played 20 times in the league under Mourinho at Spurs and managed 11 goals. He’d have comfortably been our top scorer in that form! The Bale thing is so complicated. He’s been ripped by the media and fans in Spain for little real reason other than he doesn’t embrace Real Madrid as anything more than a job and an employer. He’s played incredibly well in reality and achieved a heck of a lot in his time there, in spite of the way he’s been treated. He’s an incredible player.

I’d have him at Saints but obviously a massive asterisk over his salary. It would be entirely dependent on that really. I don’t think it will happen though.

This. I'd take him like a shot but I just can't see it happening.

I'm old enough to remember the late, great genius, George Best signing for Dunstable Town in the peak of his career, anything is possible!

I could certainly see Bale playing for his boyhood club and tearing up the Championship.

You seem to be misunderstanding the Saints experience

Pleasure must be rare and fleeting

Hope must be constant and disappointment frequent

Don’t I know it! The flagellation of supporting Saints should surely guarantee me a place in heaven or upgrade my future afterlife! The highs of the FA cup and Marcus to the lows of Lowe and everything between and after.

Not sure he’s worth the gamble given his injury record and presumably would have to take a massive pay cut to come here too.
