    1. No. It's very tricky to find a good enough player for that kind of money nowadays. Of those five players, I'd expect the majority to be inadequate. We're not going to pull off five "Michus."

    2. We can presumably spend a decent amount even if we don't sell Shaw.

Its not just a case of sell players = saints midtable forever. The midtable is incredibly tight, is we lose some stars, replace with mediocre players, get a couple of injuries, bit of PL misfortune.... could be rele battle again.

Have seen no sign that Shaw wants to move in the short term. Chelsea pay massive wages to players who don't play...such a move could be a risk for Luke at this moment (and I'm sure he knows it)...another season or two of impressive performances for us won't do him harm. Same could be true for ManU, though they aren't as daft as Chelski when it comes to signing players. Luke is no where near his peak...has to be careful about his decisions...money isn't everything if you end up as just another promising kid that never made it. Some players may be getting restless, but my money would be on Schneiderlin, Cork or Lovren...but they also have contracts and a move may not happen. Spider may want to go somewhere that would get him in the French team, but surely he may have to move to France for that as he is already getting a lot of exposure here. Could Cork get into a better team than Saints? Don't think so...his only gripe would be not playing enough early in the season.

Shaw's in a very different position this summer than he has been before, because he's now proven enough that he'd get into first teams. United definitely, and he'd probably play ahead of Cole at Chelsea now, and that's with regular Champions League football. Hell, they'd pay him a lot more than we do, and he's always supported Chelsea too. Honestly, I don't think leaving is necessarily against his best interests now that he'll be good enough to get games elsewhere.

Morgan could probably get into a better team too - Arsenal could definitely do with someone who does what he does - and he's basically admitted in French press that he'd want to be there. It'd certainly help his international prospects too (though I'm not completely convinced he's in the top 4 French CMs).

Cork surely won't be leaving. He'd not have a shout in any of the teams definitely above us and he's not good enough to get a big enough transfer fee to bother, anyway.

You didn't mention Lallana, but I'd not hold it against him at all if he'd decided he wants to play in Europe now that he's obviously good enough.

Shaw might get ahead of Cole, but he needs to get ahead of Azpilicueta to get a game and I don't see that happening for a couple more years at least.

United, then. They may have had a terrible season but they're still a million times bigger than us and their slump is unlikely to last for long.

No arguments there, he'd probably start for them. Whether he goes or not is another matter though.

This season's top five aren't just going to step aside for you to take your rightful place at the top. It's going to be a challenge to do any better next season.

Fair enough, but I think it is a little unrealistic and also a little but if a utopia view. Life in football isn't like that. Teams evolve and change. Some players may want to go because they liked Cortese, but he's gone so we are where we are.

I want Shaw to stay, however I'd be appeases if he went for big money and we had 4/5 good players come in.

Really? Back to where? The top? Don't think so. Best you can get next season is top 4.

Point 2 is the ideal Joe, my view has been about if he does go.

Point 1 - we spent the money on 3 x 10m on players from his money and then use whatever else is being given by the Liebherr family.

For the record, it would appear very tricky to find a good enough player for 12-15m judging by two of our signings, but for every two or three of those is a Michu or a Jack Cork. Someone mentioned that accepting Shaw going is defeatism; I'm beginning to think that the view that there are not the players out there to buy at a 'reasonable' fee is defeatism.

Spending more is no more of a guarantee. We've proved that ourselves.

If we make the correct signings, i can see us challenging for the title.

    I keep saying this.

People seem to think that some of our players, because they love the club, the fans, their team mates, etc, aren't interested in earning 75-150k a week. That is a fans eye view.

You won't be challenging for the title by buying our squad, we weren't challenging for the title :p

The correct signings will want to play in the Champions League.

They can earn £75k here, if they're good enough. We have players earning close to that already. The flip side to your argument is why would a player who is settled here, perhaps with a young family, want to uproot his whole life just for a few extra quid, which will make very little material difference to his life (indeed, there may be fewer first-team opportunities and a reduced prospect of getting into the national squad).

Did you even read what I said? <doh>

It's not defeatism, some of us are just saying we won't throw a hissy IF he moves on at the end of the season, like some people inevitably will. There will be a silver lining if we do sell, we aren't just going to piss £30m away.
