Frank - I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment of what you're saying there. It's yet another example of a footballer basically disregarding his contractual obligations, as he's had his head turned & thinks the grass is greener elsewhere. It happens every year & has affected virtually every club over time.

I'd love to see a club dig their heels in & 'let them rot', but when you're talking about multi million £ assets, who command 6 figure weekly wage packets, it's an incredibly costly principle......

The players know this & virtually always get their own way, as the odds are stacked in their favour. It's driving the working man away from the game imo, as it's widening the dis-connect between the players & the supporters, as the supporter gets to watch these self absorbed, multi millionaire mercs, dis guard their beloved club like an old sock.

There is a difference here. It totally depends how the Liverpool board want to view Suarez's costs. The £24 million transfer fee has already been paid ot off-set by income generated. Therefore his direct costs are his wages. His transfer value presently stands at £40,000,001 which the board have already rejected as not being big enough to even start a negotiation, Therefore Liverpool have already turned their backs on a minimum of £16 million. So in the light of those fugures the opportunity cost of letting Suarez rot on the bench is so far £16 million. If you consider matters in those terms I'm sure that John Henry would be more than willing to play the tough guy in the certain knowledge that whatever he got for a Suarez who has warmed the bench for a season, it would be in excess of £16 million.

Now Arsenal have not increased their bid and no foreign club have tendered a bid so far so Suarez may sulk for a while but in reality he has nowhere to go. Therefore look at it like the 'pot' in a game of poker. Suarez has 5 cards but Henry has 3 aces in his hand already.

I'm not sure how you've concluded that? When he signed in Jan 2011, it was on a 5 1/2 year deal & football clubs would usually write down the cost of the purchase via amortisation of the original purchase price over the length of his first contract i.e. £4.3m per annum. Add his reported £120k week wages to that & you're looking at an annual cost of circa £11m inc NI, to keep Suarez on your books & that's excluding any drop off in his asset value that keeping him another 12 months might have on his resale.

Henry is bluffing with 7 high imo mate.

I don't know but is his wage not 120k after meeting his scoring targets etc? So he only gets that level by playing and playing well. Was that not part of the new deal? (Which would encourage effort on the pitch if not in the club PR exercises)

And I'm not sure his value will drop that much simply because he'll always be picked for his national team and its World Cup year next year. In fact we may get a few more non PL offers around the 30M-35M mark that we'd largely accept now.

And I'm not a legal expert but if his only other option is to strike do we not then have a good argument to suspend him without pay altogether until he agrees to "turn up to work"

His contract extension has no bearing on the amortisation of his original purchase price, which wouldn't simply have been 'cleared' upon him signing a new deal, as it was only 18 months into a 5 1/2 year deal when it was extended, the amortisation of his value still had 4 years to run, therefore the annual charge will still be present.

Henry has a player that has openly said he wants off & there's currently only one hat in the ring, in terms of interested suitors. Therefore his position is weak despite his unprofessional tweet. His choice is currently that he can retain the players services & risk having a disruptive & half arsed employee, who's value could plummet as a result, or enter negotiations with Arsenal. He must be praying for a 3rd party to enter the fray, without it, he's got rags in his hand mate.

I think that's what happened to Tevez when he didn't turn up for work at Man City. He wasn't paid and he was fined a lot by City as well. So Suarez would be stupid to do that seeing as he has 3 more years left on his contract. I'm really starting to doubt he would do anything stupid now unless there is any sort of interest from Madrid. We've seen Suarez will do anything to get out of a club if he wants to, all I'm saying that he's left it very late with Liverpool if he is going to take us to court. Imo it's no coincidence that as Madrid have been quiet, so has Suarez.

Potentially the answer is YES. However, none of us know what clauses in his contract refer to conflict resolution and/or arbitration. The Devil lies in the detail. However, I would doubt that the Premiership has the same level of authority as the FA to intervene. Even if the may have I would feel sure that given their experiences with the FA, Liverpool would try and have the conflict between themselves and Suarez heard in a UK court.

The problem you and the media have is assuming that he wants off to Arsenal, not once has he openly said he wants off to Arsenal. Real Madrid are the only ones he is desperate to go to. They have shown no interest and it's quite late in the window, so it would be stupid of Suarez to make the same amount of noise as he did earlier in the window, as every day it looks more likely he will stay. He hasn't made any noise which is no surprise. Though I do expect him to become much louder the second Madrid show interest.

I'm with you on this. Where has he said 'openly' he wants off? He may well have done but where? There's no question he would be off asap if Real came in - he said that before he even signed - the media has done a great job convincing some that their speculations are actual facts.

Sorry Tobes but you are wrong. Whilst it is popularly called a contract extension it is nothing of the sort, it is in fact a totally new contract. Therefore all of the costs associated with the former contract are now centralised rather than individualised. Therefore the original purchase cost is not associated with the new contract in any way!

Henry's position is very strong. Suarez has signed a new contract only recently. A contract the terms and conditions of which he was happy to accept. Only a short time later Suarez says that he would like to join Real Madrid. Contractually he is free to do so at the end of the contract he signed with Liverpool a few months ago. In the interim he remains contracted to Liverpool and must fulfil his obligations.

At this moment Suarez has no market value. An offer has been rejected and therefore all we tell about it is that it did not meet expectation. Suarez has nowhere to ge and Henry knows it.
