Haha, I wasn't far off that when I ate a 5mm square piece of the Scorpion, drooling from the mouth, nose and eyes running and on the edge of vomiting, **** knows what eating a whole Reaper would be like, I wouldn't do it!

At uni once I was dared to do a teaspoon of chilli extract, thankfully I wasn't quite that foolish and just did a pea sized blob (still that stupid!) It was between term times and all they had was tap water or vodka. Neither were effective at cooling it down, but whilst in serious discomfort no puking, spitting or drooling was required!

    Bah!

Water actually makes it worse, just spreads the heat, milk is needed to dissipate it, and with the extreme chillis milk doesn't help as much as one might like! <laugh>

My other half is a big chilli fan. Last year she did a hot wings challenge with Carolina Reaper at a local here in Sydney. She made it to about 5 wings before throwing in the towel. I tried one thinking it can't be that bad. I couldn't finish one wing. It was hot beyond anything i've tried before. The initial pain (and I mean PAIN) was followed by what I can only equate to being stoned for the next 20 mins.

Incredibe stuff. The owner of the pub we were at explained that any dishes or pans they use for the Carolina Reaper recipe have to washed outside with a hose. They found the dishwasher steam evacuated their kitchen when they first used it. :emoticon-0107-sweat

I knew that at the time but unfortunitely we had finished the beer and had nothing else.
I have to say that I think the best thing is sugar to calm it down. I think that's why Ice cream is the best thing; cold, milky and sweet. My first chilli challenge was as a youth (Can't quite remember how young) in the Prince of India on Prince of Wales, when it used to actually be good, not just catering for the drunken morons on a saturday night. My dad bet me a fiver that I couldn't bite off half a chilli, chew it properly and then eat the other half. I did but after I downed my coke (Diet unfortunitely, no sugar!), finished my mums water, but it wasn't till I then had a spoon of sugar for the coming coffee that it seemed to suddenly cool down.
Soe of those challenges are just utter lunacy. I would out of curiosity like to try a tiny bit of a reaper just to see how bad it is, but trying to take down 10/17 is just stupid! That said I don't think any food related challenge can be considered a victory if you can't keep it down, pukking is an automatic fail!

    Bah!

When you see clips like this you can appreciate how far chillies are coming along. Not long ago the hottest you were likely to find in the UK would have been the scotch bonnet, a nice fruity but fiery chilli, chilli nuts like me could eat them and laugh at others who were feeling like they were going to die. but now with these extreme chillies we must be heading for a stage where even a well conditioned chilli eaters body is going to despirately try to reject them. Someone will end up dying with them unable to breath or doing some internal damage. But we all like to push our luck and boundries, so pass me the Ghost pepper!

    Bah!

You're on your own there, Generalissmo - I'm wary of adding too much paprika to my cooking <yikes>

The Bhut Jolokia (ghost pepper) is quite tame when compared with the Scorpion and the Reaper, two really bad boys...the chilli growers are working on it all the time, hybridizing plants to grow even hotter chillis, the Reaper's the hottest at the moment, but I'd guess that in a year (if not a few months even), they'll be an even hotter one out there! (Hopefully available to buy on the internet)<ok>

Whilst I would likely try a bit of reaper, I don't think I'd ever buy any. I think the level of heat obtainable from the sauces and chillies I have encountered is all I need. Pleasurable pain levels if you will. I strongly suspect anything more than ghost pepper level is going to lose the pleasure element!
Like I say as a one off I'd try a smidge though!

    Bah!

Haha. I do want to try a Ghost Pepper challenge at some point. Watched so many videos of it, I should just for the experience and appreciate it properly.

Is the Chocolate Bhutlah not becoming known as the world hottest now?

Several of the really hot sauces recently are made using extract which I assume is a concentrate.
Many producers I've met are fiercely (?) proud of their Scoville ratings by natural methods, rather than the perceived 'cheating' :emoticon-0112-wonde of achieving heat by using extracts. <ok>
I love Lemon Drop chilli jam, which will seem a little lightweight to some of you fire-garglers <yikes>
Good thread, this one - especially after all the heartache of the weekend's football!

Yea, I like topics like this that interest me, that why I try and start some different ones on here. As, more often than not, the football is depressing and the discussions are all witch hunts of who's to blame for each thing.

I would be interested to know how these reaper chillies compare to some of the crazy hot sauces now available? I know that the scoville scale should give us a good idea, but how much is really scientifically measured and what is speculative to sell their "hottest ever" products? For example Dave's insanity sauces are measured on a scale of insanity but no mention of Scoville units. This stuff is good and hot but doesn't illicite the same level of responses from me at least as these mega chillies seem to on others. This stuff is rated Insanity + +. Not the hottest I've ever eaten but a bloody good kick to be sure!

I've heard of Dave's Insanity sauces. They are used on challenges as well. Is this one of the good tasting ones General? Or just hot?

I tried to add a load that you mentioned as hot and tasty on amazon, but could only find a few. Where do you usually buy these sauces from?
