The 'colleague' in question [which on the face of it doesn't mean anything unless you know my job and that he was a co-worker, as in we lectured together!] has written six and co-written eight books on the use of the English language. I thought I was pretty safe in my assessment of the use of the word, seeing as it's not that hard for anyone to check on the internet anyway, and he confirmed it was correct. Don't hold your breath on this thread not getting any stupider though
