<laugh> nice one.

The 'colleague' in question [which on the face of it doesn't mean anything unless you know my job and that he was a co-worker, as in we lectured together!] has written six and co-written eight books on the use of the English language. I thought I was pretty safe in my assessment of the use of the word, seeing as it's not that hard for anyone to check on the internet anyway, and he confirmed it was correct. Don't hold your breath on this thread not getting any stupider though <laugh>

Yes of course he has<ok>

Just for the record the 2 people I emailed are both current English professors at Harvard and have written 14 books each and co written 20. I win.

So why are you arguing that his use of a word is correct when the rest of the sentence is a grammatical car crash?

I think you need to ask the English experts on this thread that one since it was them who picked up on the word. They were so intrigued by it they took it to another thread!

No he didn't confirm the sentence was correct because it isn't <ok> and the sentence has never been the issue <ok>

This is the post you first took issue with.

"If I was accusing someone of being stupid, I'd have probably avoided using 'stupider' in a sentence, it's not great English."

As you can see the poster doesn't say stupider is not a word but that used in the sentence it was poor. A sentence you agree is wrong.So the sentence is exactly the issue.

Even by internet forum standards, this is ****ing inane. I'm out <ok>

<applause>

Which just goes to show, a Liverpool fan can never admit they (or a fellow fan) can be wrong. It's tiresome at the best of times but this is frankly ridiculous.
