I’ve got a rottie. First one we’ve had. Have loads of experience of big dogs and this one is the most loving, well balanced dog. She’s been trained and given discipline and rules from 8 weeks old. Wouldn’t swap her for the world but rotties aren’t a dog for any inexperienced owner.

    100% correct

A dog will do what the owner allows it to do. Some idiots should be trained before they can own a dog.

The hardest thing to do is train a dog to get down off a sofa after allowing it up there in the first place, all about boundaries and rules

Whenever there's a 'death by dog' people who own that breed will inevitably say 'There are no bad dogs, just bad owners'.

I'm not sure that concept works in this case,
    https://www.romfordrecorder.co.uk/n...-hornchurch-death-woman-mauled-xl-bully-dogs/

The truth is that owners will always believe that they have these killer dogs under complete control when they don't.

There's no need for dogs like this to exist.

The people who defend them probably say 'I know my rights' quite often.

There's dozens of breeds of dogs to pick from so why are these dogs being allowed to be bred.
I'm not a dog person and never understood the phrase " my dog wouldn't do that" when obviously all breeds of dogs have it in them to bite, worry sheep etc.
It's not the dog it's the owners fault...utter bollocks.

    I'm saying it's both tbh.

People always pride themselves on being in control of their dogs but that's never a guarantee.

Dogs like these kill their owners who feed them and care for them, even breeders have died.

Around 40 postal workers are bitten every week by all kinds of dogs.

My son was a Royal Mail manager and would have to go to the houses involved ...

... the owners would almost always say, 'I can't understand it, they've never bitten anyone before.'

The best trained dog in the world can develop a brain tumour, or whatever, and bite out of frustration.

I agree, you have just typed utter bollocks, if a dog worries sheep or bites someone, how did it get into a situation where it could do that? Did it open the front door, drive to a farmers field then run about chasing sheep?

If a dog bites someone, how did a dog end up in a scenario where it could bite someone? Did it invite some people around, ask them to stay alone in a room with them?

Because the owners need to fuel their massive ego. Other big dogs have been used as working dogs for centuries, XL bullies have never had any purpose other than a “look at me and my big ugly menacing dog”.

There was a very scientific breeding programme undertaken to restore the bulldog breed closer to its original type. This resulted in old tyme bulldogs which had all the positive health aspects with the Churchill bulldog temperament.

The KC refused to recognise it and it also led to various off shoots being bred for profit without any thought for health or welfare.

Such a shame as the proper old tyme bulldogs were starting to reverse the years of terrible breeding the Churchill bulldog suffered

people do not understand dogs, people think the dog is ok with them so it will be ok with everyone...wrong.

my first dog was a small cross, i have never seen a more loving dog or one that everyone loved, she was well known around the village and if she was around without me she was welcomed at a couple of houses.

she had been around kids (babies, toddlers and up) and never got 'angry' with them yet even she took off after a lad that ran past she was growling and barking, the lad stopped and she turned back and returned home...the lad knew me and her very well and was more shocked that she had shown this completely different side to her.

now, had she been a rotty or bully etc it could have been a much worse story but it taught me that you can NEVER be sure, they need to be trained and they need to be shown respect.

That's the key factor, doesn't matter what breed a dog is, they can't be assumed to be "safe" just because they are with the owner.

My bulldog is soft as clarts, has no bite strength at all and I trust her, but when we have visitors or friends, family round she is watched until she gets bored of the fuss and goes to bed

    What he's saying is...

People who want to own this sort of dog, shouldn't own any sort of dog at all.

I know that area very well - used to use that road as a bit of a cut through going to work. It's very much a 'settled' traveller site. Not saying this family were, and it adds nothing to the debate!
