If SD bought the club for £40m, then sells the club for £40m, he would only get back the money he has put in (e.g. £5m). The other £35m would be paid to whoever SD owed the money to (e.g. club for parachute payments). It's probably more than £5m because the club has probably needed more money since (e.g. to pay for losses, court cases etc).

No, he paid £3 million for a 20% stake. There is no more money that he owes. That’s it. By doing that they valued the club at £15 million.
