The Council's plans for the redevelopment of the area are awesome and address part of the problem of pedestrian access and use of the land around the Sheepfolds and the Riverside. I would hope that the club do liaise with them on issues such as the Metro.
Firstly, on what they can do to improve St Peter's and how it can link in with the plans already announced. I'm not a Civil Engineer, so I don't have a clue about what can and can't be done.
The other issue would be to extend the Metro to other parts of Wearside. There's been lots of talk about the extension linking South Hylton to Pelaw via Penshaw and Washington, but that's all it's been - talk. Metro links to Sunderland Centre are still piss poor in comparison with the centre of Newcastle and Gateshead, and the fact that something the size of Washington does not having a single station is criminal. The use of the old Leamside Line to provide links to Barnes, Doxford Park, Houghton and Durham would be particularly useful for reducing match traffic and for bringing shoppers to the City Centre.
