Football is starting to unravel.

Derby County lost in the play off final under Lampard, sold their ground, reinvented how players are valued, brought in Rooney, etc.

They were expected to make another push for the PL and 'on the brink' of being taken over by a relative of the Man City owner.

But now they're below Wycombe, looking doomed and could be the next big club in L1.

WTF is going wrong with football.

I think some of the problem comes from football clubs being someone's 'play thing' rather than being the institution they are.

'Its not going to plan' they throw the play thing away & find something different. It is as important the personality & background of investor's to assess this as it is how deep there pockets.

Guess part of problem is the club is nort born into you like us (tourist fans etc), or ownership wise a local bussiness man owning the club

Part of why its not the game the likes of us fell in love with.

Your right its mad some of the examples, remember QPR having a banner at Chelsea after being taken over saying 'were richer than you'....that weñt well also.

Why we all need to pray the intentions of our potential new owners are right...why i was gutted FPP fell through as the plans your were told would have shaped us on the right plan...BEYOND what we possibly could have dreamt regarding area regeneration.

Any ITKs have ideas on extent of potential new owner's ideas are, no problem if you cant name due to source....more what they have planned

The curse of been loaned money by FPP or MSD, they might see something in having a portfolio of league 1 clubs<laugh>

I think it's just an issue with the financial model, the fact that you can make **** loads in the PL but most championship clubs lose a fortune trying to get there. It seems very hard to actually build something in the championship. So you get owners who initially pump money in, hoping to get to the PL but they generally do it without much of a plan (similar on a bigger scale to Donald just throwing money at Grigg because he had a good record in the league). If the initial gamble doesn't pay off clubs can be screwed with massive wage bills and players they can't shift. The parachute payment thing doesn't help either, you can try and build something but every season you get PL clubs coming down with vastly more resources . The whole of football needs a reset, but I doubt the fan led review of football governance will ever happen, instead it'll be led by the big clubs who will exacerbate the problems. Bad times ahead for a lot of clubs I imagine.

People with the clout of FPP would be able to progress their plans of engaging local/national business, the council, University, etc. They'd have boosted the local economy, and improved the foundations of the club, mainly by being the catalyst and bringing in outside finance. That's because people need to see something they can believe in and invest their time, money and effort. If FPP had come in they'd have immediately 'coaxed' the appropriate bodies into improving the Metro station and approaches to the stadium. They were appalled at the three routes from the train station, town and Metro station. One is through Sheepfolds and another down the disgusting back alley at the back of the Deaf club and Victory. The only decent one is a crowded narrow pavement with shoppers at the bus stops. People coming from the other Metro station and Wheatsheaf have a rat run to get over the roads busy with match day traffic. Once across the road there's the burger alley and bridge that, crazily, has traffic on it on match days. Even the Park & Ride access involves a trudge across a muddy field and occasional confrontations with away supporters.

Its alright for all the daft lads but can't be too pleasant for families who, whether we like it or not, are our future.

The current owners, and people like them, aren't capable of any of this ...

... people simply don't have any faith in them.

Rooney will be manager there in the next week or so.

Excellent post as usual.

It seems there are only two options for clubs promoted to the PL.

1) Spend 75% of your income and cross your fingers.

2) Keep your income, cross your fingers and, if you go down, use the money to come back up.

Recruitment matters so much. Coaches, at first team level and also at the younger level so you can avoid the knee jerk ‘must fill’ signings which unfortunately have been our trade mark. I’m constantly saying on repeat we need owners who always have a 5 year plan not the speculative quick win merchants we have right now. We should and in fact could (without the youngsters leaving) have strikers midfielders and defenders ready to step up had we not sold our jewels but we need people investing to save ahead. Donald Fox and Methven didn’t have the money, vision or intention. With this change I want that to be our MO and not just recruit journeyman professionals.
