Second to the ball doesn't always mean late. Late is when the ball has left the area. He challenged for the ball and took out Mason. It's not a foul.

People intent on blaming anyone for what was an accident need to just accept that it's a contact sport.

It was a foul, we got a free kick. He challengd for the ball and missed it because Mason got there first. Cahill was second to the ball, therefore late.

Probably because when the ball is in the air that's all you can do. And you don't wear helmets with spikes on them in games.

To be honest, I think trying to apportion any blame to Cahill was a more inappropriate comment.
