So Rodriguez deal collapsing and the kids being flown out the Portugal. This week doesn't sound like it's going very well, Sunderland...

10 of the SAFC U21 squad have flown out here to Portugal and will play some part in tonight's game. Told it's a reward for their displays

ATLETICO Madrid midfielder Cristian Rodriguez is now highly unlikely to join Sunderland, the Echo understands.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet spoke of his eagerness last week to sign fellow Uruguayan Rodriguez, who is expected to leave the La Liga champions this summer.

There have subsequently been reports in both Spain and in Uruguay that Rodriguez’s signing is a mere formality and he is on the verge of becoming a Sunderland player.

But that is far from the case.

Senior sources in Spain have indicated that it would now be a major surprise if Rodriguez joins Sunderland and it is thought that the Black Cats are now longer pursuing the 28-year-old.

That will not stop Sunderland looking to bolster their options in midfield though, with Poyet keen for further recruits after the loss of Craig Gardner, Ki Sung-Yueng and Jack Colback at the end of last season.

Both Cardiff’s Jordon Mutch and Manchester City’s Jack Rodwell have been on Sunderland’s radar throughout the summer, albeit there is a hefty list of suitors for the latter.

As poolie points out on another thread we still need another 5-7 players to have a fully in depth squad...

Worrying times

We could be Southampton, mate. I know the Saints fans go on about their academy prospects, but the guts have been ripped out of what was a very promising side. We're trying to upgrade from relegation candidates and the four we've brought in look like they're precisely that. We only need a few more in, so too soon to panic just yet, although it's certainly getting a bit sweaty...

Is there been any reason given why any deal has gone tits up??? Or were we anywhere near any deal in the first place? I'm starting to get sick of being led this merry dance!
