Who was celebrating? I was just wondering why you were all over here when your team was playing. I'm not on your board.

Game started 4:40 PM. Add 92 and 15 minutes and you get 6:47 Pm game ending (approx.)

<doh> Piskie's post at 6.58 pm quotes my post which say "explains why the arsenal fans are all over here", which was at 5.11 pm.

I'm referring to the Bale vs Walcott discussion, which was taking place in the run up to and during your Emirates Cup game <ok>

I can't be bothered with this though so no need to reply.

Sometimes I think you've never watched a football match!

It's completely obvious that any player, good or bad, will tend to have better stats in a better team.

Disagree. In a more balanced team stats will be more evenly spread.

Ozil has much better stats Iniesta, despite the fact Iniesta played in an arguably better team.

Which all tends to highlight what a waste of time stats are.

    Do a thought experiment DL

Imagine Bale in a Championship level team playing in the PL. He would get double and triple marked, the others wouldn't get him the ball much and wouldn't score if he gave it to them. So he'd get few goals or assists. Now imagine him playing for a team as good as Spain in the PL. The team would get loads of goals and Bale would get his fair share of goals and assists too as they couldn't afford to double mark. So the better the team the better stats for everyone. Stats by themselves are meaningless of course as PnP has demonstrated as they are both short-term and too broadbrush.

I think the comparison between the two is fruitless because of reasons you've stated. In Spain they mark in zones, in England they man mark which is exactly why players like Ronaldo have better stats in Spain than in England. I don't really think it has anything to do with quality just style of play.

As SPURF ;) said though, stats are pointless and can be manipulated to prove what you want it to.

PNP was arguing that Xavi had worse stats that Chris Brunt though, so which one is it ?

The point is you can only really measure like for like, because Chris Brunt's stats would be far worse in a Barcelona side and Xavi's off the scale in a West Brom side. So they don't really give an indication player, only the environment he's in.

We've heard endlessly about how Spurs are supposedly on a level with Arsenal now, so you can argue that Bale and Walcott can be measured using a similar environment, they also play in a similar position - and their stats indicate that they are roughly on a par with each other.

There's one stat that is not pointless or manipulated, just a pure fact. Over 50% of our threads are derailed.

I reluctantly accepted an invitation to the Emirates Cup today from 2 gooner friends. Really enjoyed getting involved with the Galatasaray chants and watching ex-goon Eboue lift the cup for Galatasaray at the end <laugh>

Stats, stats, stats, that's all we ever hear from you lot. Well, in this case, your stats mean SFA! The difference is that Bale can, and does change the entire course of a game single handed - which he had to do far too often last season. THAT is why he is the subject of world record bids, and why nobody gives a toss about Walcott.

    All clear, now?
