Yes I did ignore it...the ball was long gone, so the movement of the Whelans leg was toward Mods leg, he did try to pullout, but ****ed it up basically!...foul and a pen because its in the box, stonewaller according to the rules, an 'attempted' kick at Mods leg, especially from the refs angle, Mods fall afterwards however displeasing on the eye is irrelevant.

I'm not judging it on his reaction, I just genuinely don't think he kicked him at all. The ball looks long gone in slow motion by the way, not quite the same in real time.

btw do you seriously think a premier league defender meant to boot Modric in the shin inside the area?

Bale was travelling towards the ball and was ahead of Maloney, who knocked Bale's leg into the other whilst not looking to compete for the ball. It might not have been intentional, infact I'm fairly sure it's not but it's still a clumsy foul. There really shouldn't be a question of it being a foul.

The fact that you and lots of others assumed it was a dive despite having no idea of knowing whether there was contact from the available camera angles sums up why the majority of fans thinking Bale is a diver is neither here nor there. What Maloney did was very gracious but do you really expect other players to be honest and admit they fouled Bale in the other situations where you think he's dived? I don't and that puts us in a rather impossible position to defend him as on the one hand you've got "neutral" fans who are happy to assume the worst of him and on the other you've got Spurs and Wales fans defending him who are of course "deluded" if they think Bale isn't the biggest diver in Britain.

Whether he did or didn't its still a pen under the 'attempt' rule.

and btw, you need to rethink the Q if you honestly believe a Stoke player or any other would commit a foul in the box if they thought they'd get away with it, happens every week Drogs, some you get away with some you don't is the reality. <ok>

Even Stoke fans weren't contesting any of it at the time...

Whether he did or he didn't, Whelan has given him the option by mistiming his challenge. Just like Jones at West Brom last season. He'd been caught, was likely going to lose the ball as a result of being fouled, and so went down. I don't see anything wrong with that. He had no obligation to help Carson out of a mess of his own making.

From FIFA's Laws of the Game 2012:

A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
    • kicks or attempts to kick an opponent
    • trips or attempts to trip an opponent

Whelan kicked or attempted to kick Modric and the referee deemed it to be careless (along with pretty much every Stoke fan, yourself included). There is NOTHING in the rules about how much somebody is impeded, how much contact is made, whether they could have stayed on their feet or any other such matters.

Think what you want about Modric's conduct but don't say it wasn't a penalty. It was a stonewall, black and white, indisputable foul.

yes I agree, but I think he 'attempted' to get the ball and missed.

btw, I think that 'rule' right there is the problem with diving. If a player willing to dive knows that even an attempt can get him a set piece/penalty then all the more reason to go down.

surely you're aware that what I'm complaining about is Modric's conduct?

You've been complaining that it wasn't a foul, which Modric's conduct has nothing to do with.

My main point was that Modric dived though.

The ref blew immediately, so with the whistle gone, what difference does it make what Mod does after?? he's heard the whistle and fell over, so what?. The fall has not swayed a decision, which is what you're inferring as a possibility, but it's irrelevant in this particular instance, the refs already made his decision!, so I don't see the issue with Mods 'conduct' afterwards.

sportsmanship if anything, it's the main problem with football at the moment.

agree to disagree, I don't think there was any contact or attempt to kick Modric, you do.

I agree about sportsmanship being a big problem, but I think that you're targeting the wrong players and definitely the wrong team.

<laugh> I'm not targeting Spurs, you're not the worst for it. We've no angels ourselves but none of our lot of serial divers, except for maybe Torres who has gone under the radar throughout his entire career for diving somehow. I think Suarez is head and shoulders above anyone in the league.

Whats worse then, a player falling over (with intent to deceive), or the rest of the team celebrating the pen like a goal already, with some imaginary card waving for good measure! Like you, I don't like to see any of it. <ok>

yeah both classless, hate it when they congratulate the player who's been 'fouled' in the area - even if he has been fouled!

Seems like I've missed a lot today. Luiz is clumsy but he isn't dirty. You don't even need to have played football, common sense should tell you if you are running at that pace you can't possibly know if you will break/hurt somebody's jaw. It was a reckless/cynical body check that went wrong.

Ivanovic has dived once or twice but so has Bale. Klinsmann was in fact the first serial diver in the PL. We all have/had them. If a player wants to dive he will no matter who he plays for, unless the manager intervenes.
