Good to see North Londons finest exports playing no part in the first Classico...is the grass greener! In fact Modric has been hardly used at all, other than his buttocks as hot waterbottles for a certain seat! Wonder what his ****head National manager thinks of that! :D

I believe there are more and more closer and closer calls in every sport. I think it's not better video technology, but players being more and more aware of just exactly where the rubber hits the road and getting closer and closer to that point.

While I agree you shouldn't rule that ball in, because the camera angle is inconclusive, my first instinct was that the ball made it an inch or two past the line. The still in the video above does not quite show the ball at its furthest point. If you figure the camera's angle, and adjust, I think it just barely made it. But, again, correct not to call a ball in unless theres's some way to be certain.

I'm not really a programmer, but I think given a certain amount of time, I could write a computer vision program that could tell if a ball went over a line... It's really not a difficult program to write.

if we had goal line technology we would need all that bother

  5. The thing is, it was so highly predictable.

I'm glad the rat-boy left us, since we probably wouldn't have got Dembele, if he'd stayed loyal.

I watch a fair bit of Rugby on Sky. Amazingly, even with all the technology, fourth officials STILL get it wrong. O.k. I know that it can be a lot more difficult to judge if a try has been scored, in some circumstances, but with the number of camera angles they have now, there really should be no excuse for getting wrong, what many can see clearly on their TV screen.

Letting overanalysis interrupt the game will lead you down the path to being American. :emoticon-0149-no:

The model system is the one used at tennis tournaments. It seems to solve all disputes, and is entertaining enough that the small delay seems worth it.

As to the season's prospects: Yes, it's very early. But I see the teams in four packs at the moment. The big money trio, the favorites for the fourth spot (Arsenal and Spurs), the other two CL contenders (Newcastle and Everton), and then Liverpool. Chelsea looks the strongest of the big three, but it's tight and will remain too close to call till the last week or two of the season. Arsenal deserves to be favored over Spurs, but only based on their long record of CL qualification. Spurs have a slight edge in terms of players, I think. It's a question of how much the manager can get out of the squads, and, probably, who can win the big games at the end of the season.

  8. It also depends on when Arsenal begin their usual bottle-job. Last season, they did it in reverse. Had it not been for us being hampered by Harry's delusions of lifting the World Cup for England, we'd have finished comfortably in third, and might even have pushed the top two.

I agree with 3rd, but you would have been nowhere near United or City I'm afraid. With the run in of fixtures you had post-Christmas, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, City, Sunderland, Everton etc away you were always going to drop of at some point, anyone would have with those games. However I agree you should still have had 3rd signed, sealed, delivered given how far ahead you where.

As for Arsenal surely they won't have another clanger? Obviously our collapse will begin in December as per but I'd be shocked if Arsenal did another 2 wins in 11 ala 07/08 and 10/11 seasons.

I know that there will be a Chelsea thread started but I'd just like to get a question in before I forget. Will having AVB be an advantage to us against them as he knows the team so well? As they are top and getting the results under normal circumstances we'd probably struggle but having him now might just prove to be one big advantage. Thoughts. As we've only lost one this season I think we can win it.

    #4555
  16. It's an advantage, for me, simply because AVB will want to win this game more than any other.

Lord Triesman says that John Terry has damaged Chelsea's reputation.

Remember, this is the bloke who (until slandering the Spanish and Russian FAs in the same sentence) was in charge of England's 2018/22 World Cup bid, talking about how Chelsea FC had a spotless reputation until John Terry racially abused Anton Ferdinand. No wonder FIFA gave the tournament to Russia!

Unfortunately he won't know much about Hazard and Oscar and they have transformed their team.

Anyone else watch (or record in my case) Big Match revisited on Saturday and Sunday? Saturday's main game was Chelsea v Liverpool from 1979 with Chelsea trying to avoid relegation (or the good old days as it is known). Had Ron Harris in midfield. Scarey thought!

Didn't enjoy today's edition - had Spurs losing to Brum from 1983. Archibald was a greedy B'stard!

Chelsea have been relegated and have had a few battles against it in their time including once a match against us. I think you're being a touch too generous to Oscar and Hazard SD.

Possibly, but those 2 have turned them from a defensive to an offensive (in all senses) team. Their tactics are different from when AVB was there.
