Murray has resigned as he has cancerous tumours in his stomach. I hope he recovers, but he certainly shouldn't be welcome down the valley anymore.
Former owner to step down after more than 25 years at the club
Former Charlton Athletic owner Richard Murray has resigned from his position as chairman of Charlton Athletic Football Club with immediate effect due to illness.
A statement from Mr Murray reads: “Over the past few weeks I have been having various tests regarding my health and it’s been discovered I have a number of malignant tumours in my stomach which require minor surgery at this stage.
“It is felt that I need to focus fully on my recovery so, with sadness, I am resigning my position as chairman of Charlton Athletic Football Club. I still have a great love for Charlton, which will stay with me always, although last season was very tough. I wish everyone at the club the best as we strive to get back to the Championship, and I look forward to returning to The Valley soon.”
Charlton Athletic owner Roland Duchatelet said: “I was saddened to hear of Richard’s poor health. Richard has done so much for the club and I know it was difficult for him to step down after being so intrinsically involved over the last 25 years. He is positive about his long-term prognosis though and all of us at Charlton look forward to seeing him back at The Valley very soon.”
Charlton Athletic CEO Katrien Meire added: “Richard has been a key part of this club for such a long time, and since I have arrived he’s been a great support to me, which I shall miss.”
