Cheers Yorkie. Up to 1885 there had been the possibility of a split in English football between the northern and midland clubs which had varying degrees of professionalism, as opposed to the south which was bitterly opposed and wanted to keep the sport amateur. Which was the first club in the south of England to become fully professional ?
Reading seems to be the first Proff team in the south I see... but fully professional I cant see.. How about Fulham... they are an oold club
Arsenal were the first in London, but there is a club in the south which went professional earlier Frenchie. Rather a surprising answer this one.
Time for a few clues. I have to say that when I first came across this information I didn't quite believe it - maybe even thought that 'fully professional' meant that the fans were paid to watch them. But having researched it I find it to be true - but then I can't imagine anyone wanting to play there without money, which probably explains it !
All yours Yorkie. They were paying their players by 1890 and went fully professional in 1891 - there were a number of others, including Woolwich Arsenal, who went professional later in the year, but Luton were the first in the entire South of England. Much as it grieves me to admit Over to you.
Is it this season's target for the total number of EFL and EPL points Watford have won since joining the league?
