Cheers Yorkie. Up to 1885 there had been the possibility of a split in English football between the northern and midland clubs which had varying degrees of professionalism, as opposed to the south which was bitterly opposed and wanted to keep the sport amateur. Which was the first club in the south of England to become fully professional ?

Time for a few clues. I have to say that when I first came across this information I didn't quite believe it - maybe even thought that 'fully professional' meant that the fans were paid to watch them. But having researched it I find it to be true - but then I can't imagine anyone wanting to play there without money, which probably explains it !
