Tony Roberts?? Good bloke, is he still running marathons? I used to work with his dad Jimmy Roberts -proper gent, quiet but tough as old boots.
Nah didnt have a drug problem but it was a relaxed atmosphere for a bit of weed.

I used to go in Ship years ago too.

I don't think it's the fact they were sat in first class that was the issue, that's generally where there's spare seats anyway. I think the problem was that they were escorting Millwall fans that they felt were enough of a threat that they closed the bar on the train, but were then sat in a completely different carriage to them. With at least the buffet car between them I'm not sure how happy the rest of the passengers would be with that. Personally I wouldn't care because I don't view it as that big a threat, but the police were acting as though they were a threat and then just leaving them alone.

I may know him by sight but its a long time since i went in Ship. Was the 80's and early 90's. The Post office shut down a few years ago. Got a text off a mate just now saying Tony is a landlord again, thinks he is in Linnet & Lark.
Im trying to remember the name of the bloke who owned the post office for years-Ray summat. couldnt stand him. Are you old enough to remember Dave the Rave? Used to be a Ship regular-dancing round the pool table same jokes year after year.

It was ok. The big man from the "Scottish Justice" thread was sat with the Millwall fans in case it kicked off.

It use to be APs job to sit down prematch with the police and pay for the numbers of police present. If it kicked off and we hadnt "bought"enough coppers to deal with it then the club would be fined!.Guessing its now the stadium managers job but imagine same rules apply.

    approx.200 millwall fans @ the kc....Pathetic really.

but when you consider that many of there fans could well be in the clink already after the london riots and the police were on the look out for any of the missing trouble causers from the last time it appears only the decent wall fans turned up. but yes many police on saturday doing nothing. i walked past 5 cops in a huddle planning there night out.
    overkill, what overkill ? lol.

Talking of intelligence, some of you lot need to have a think about your ability to structure a logical argument.

The officers inside the ground are paid for by the club, and work overtime to ensure they are not removed from doing what the tax payer expects (hence it is mainly cheaper stewards inside the stadium these days).

Outside the ground, the officers are paid for by the police. In the same way that more officers are put on duty for friday night drinking, or protests etc., the force has to cover for public order potential. The level of officers used is based on a risk rating that is defined well in advance of a match, based on intelligence and POTENTIAL threats.

The fact that there was "overkill" should be something to celebrate, as the alternative would be watching Hull fans getting a kicking without help. The show of strength will be a deterent to any other clubs who think they can come here and have some fun...

What is really disgusting is the ill conceived notion that the police are to blame for having too many resources. It wasn't long ago that the forum was moaning there were too few, and that they were ill equiped to cope with the trouble Millwall caused. Shutting a bar on a train (where the highest risk supporters were) is common sense rather than overkill. As for not sitting "with" the fans on the train - please - that would be a recepie for disaster and hours of baiting and antagonism.

I go to matches to watch football, and not criticise other services who do a difficult job. All those officers "standing round planning their night out" would have been happy to put their neck on the line to drag some pissed up idiot with a knife off you. While we are at it we could also blame ambulance and fire for getting rid of seats in our stadium, and insisting on huge access points to the ground that are never needed (until a fire, when you'd be thankfull).

I'd love to see you lot form a committee to police the games and watch the ensuing chaos. You are probably the same supporters who think you could do a better job than Barmby... or Brown... Or Pearson.

Wake up and realise you are the ones being pathetic.

What a load of nonsense from start to finish that was. You don't seem to have bothered reading the other replies but simply responded to what you thought they might say.

    Now you are baiting me.

I read the whole thread, and the biggest issue was the perception of the inept nature of planning, and over worrying by managers. You mention resource management, and officers standing off and not doing anything, yet bemoan the presence of horses designed to deal directly with aggression. Comically, you refer to anyone reading message boards being able to plan resources, as if this forum world is more advanced than public order intellience held by the police. You also think that there wont be any police on the streets when needed, as if they will be allowed to take time off freely, leaving huge holes in domestic policing.

My post pointed out the slightly larger strategic picture, viewed by those more qualified to make decisions that keep you safe.

If you think you know it all, good luck.

I refuse to get drawn into an argument, as I'd suggest it is already quod erat demonstrandum. Most of what is written above is factually wrong, mainly in relation to how things are planned, and what risk indicators are important. You can't argue on the wrong facts.

Police get roundly criticised (by MP's) for not having "enough" officers available for a relatively unforseen event.

And here we are criticising police for having too many officers for a forseen risk that didn't materialise.

If you aren't happy, write to your MP.

    Facts you say? :cheesy::cheesy::cheesy:

Simple facts. The Police spend a lot of money gathering 'intelligence' For free, they could have known they wouldn't need that many officers. Those officers need paying for, be it in time or money. That resource is finite, needless over use in one area leaves a short fall in another. If it doesn't they're over resourced.
