You could literally say that about anything. You just have sirloin steak with garlic butter? Boring as ****. Literally just tomato sauce on a hot dog? Boring as ****. Just butter on toast? Boring as ****.

I guess, but it really sounds like a historic thing that old people would tell their grandchildren to be grateful because in their day "all we had was lemon and sugar".

At the risk of going OT I must be the only omnivore man who doesn’t like steak. I’ve eatdn it in numerous countries around the world and some reasonably pricey restaurants and every time I just think ‘meh’.

Americans don't make pancakes. They make drop scones. Fact.

I sort've get what you mean as I've never had a steak that's better than when I've cooked it, which is daft considering the prices restaurants charge for it.

I'm having a rump steak tonight, I just do it in the pan on all sides and bung it in the oven for a bit. Fried onions on top. I haven't had a better one in the 'finest' steak places.

I always convince myself that I'm missing something and continue ordering it thinking it'll be great this time, but yeah it's usually meh.

It's probably because I like the actual pancake flavour, the lemon and sugar/syrup just compliment it. If you need to bung 100 things in it you might as well not have a pancake.

Well, not to go all religious, but lest we forget it's actually Shrove Tuesday, the beginning of Lent. What you're supposed to do is get rid of the **** in your cupboard before the new year and the bounty it brings. Which is why I chuckled at Peter Andre on GMTV (or whatever the **** it's called now, Carabao Breakfast?) putting Strawberries on his pancakes. The strawberries he must have left over from last summer?

Lent. It's like the ****ing stone ages.

Exactly that. Well it turns out I’m not the only one then, but people always look at me like I’m mental when I say it.

I’m not a vegetarian by any means but I probs only eat meat once every 3 weeks.

Yeah that's the other thing. To me, the traditional fluffy, floppy, English pancake is more texture than taste and I'm not a fan of things which meet that criteria. It also puts me off sparkling water and pretty much all beer. I realise this is getting increasingly controversial but anyway there it is.

Is the sprinkling of sugar because jam isn't sweet on its own

The flour doesn't change the taste though, it just thickens the batter. Effectively, you're beating eggs and adding flour to thicken. He may not be the greatest pancake maker in the world, but having taught myself how to make both, I know which ones I prefer. And much like BCC, I don't just have them once a year.

I know somebody who has their steak well done with ketchup. He was asked politely but firmly to leave.

I try to put other things in , but find they just spoil the taste of the pancake , same reason I'm the boring git who orders margarita pizza, as I think the other toppings just get in the way <laugh>
