What's that got to do with anything?

Just pondering the love of village life, drive to school, couldn't get to City games etc.
The diameter of the earth is about 7918 miles.

It's the earth's circumference which is 24902 miles give or take a bit.

So it is the case that you can't get 13000 miles away from any single point on the surface.

The earth's not a true sphere and the terrain does include mountains and suchlike but none are high enough to affect this overall calculation.

However these are theoretical straight flying distances, presuming free travel across international air space and not adjusted for weather systems. If free travel is denied or adverse conditions dictate then you might be able to find two points which cannot be flown between directly in under 13000 miles.

And if you were to try to go by road or sea...

My neighbours are nearly 25,000 miles away, if I set of in the wrong direction.

I read once that on equal scales, the earth is smoother than a snooker ball.

I think North Ferriby Tiger confirmed that this Ghurkin (BCC, Fez, HT & others) & Brian Marwood were not the same person.

Some people (one in-particular) do appear to have a little fascination with him & wrongly outing others as him.

"You're not Ghurkin who used to post on the Citymad forum are you? Well you'll deny it if you are."

"are you Ghurkin in disguise?"

"Are you Ghurkin in disguise? You display all the hallmarks."

"Although some posters may differ, your collective insults of (almost) all and sundry confirm to me that you are indeed the aforesaid Ghurkin. How's the other late-night rambler, your evil twin Marwood, doing Ghurks?"

"Now, now, Ghirks, remember there are ladies present (and some gentlemen, too). "Daft lad", "daft sod", "good lad", "silly sod" ... Do you know how many other posters you have labelled as sucj? All very Ghurkian, eh?"

"You could easily have emptier hands, Ghurks, if you didn't ALWAYS insist on having the last word."

"He would frequently have long debates, very late at night, with his own (apparently) alter ego, Brian Marwood."

"But it was noticeable that Ghurkin never laid into Marwood the way he always did with anyone else who stood up to him."

Of course when they're proved to be wrong they wallop out a little BS.

"I have known throughout that you are not Ghurkin -- he was a lot cleverer and much funnier than you -- but, just like him, you will insist on having the final word. Go ahead 'daft lad', prove me wrong! (spits and walks away)."

Strange folk we have around here.

Speaking of scales, not that it's relevant to anything,

If the Earth was the size of a basketball, the moon would be the size of a tennis ball 24 feet away.

If Saturn's rings were a sheet of paper, they would be 1/1000th the thickness of a piece of standard A4.

Interesting.

How big is Uranus?

I'm amazed at the amount of time you have on your hands. When do you ever work?

No idea who this Ghurkin is you are associating me with, but was it him and his lass taken out out the McDonald's earlier in the week? I heard not everyone is too keen ...

I dunno.

Some people will try anything to avoid living in Hull.

Kinnell. In 1986 I moved to Sunderland.

It wasn't 13000 miles away from civilisation but it sure felt like it.

On the contrary. I moved to Sunderland in 1960 and lived there for 7 years. I loved the place, loved the people, loved the beer (especially Nimmo's at that time) and loved going to Roker Park. I was involved with Sunderland Football Club (in a non-footballing capacity) and received a free season pass each year. I never missed a mid-week game, saw and met the great Charlie Hurley and also Brian Clough among others. They had a wonderful Night Club there at the time called Weatherall's - we had nothing like it in Hull - where I saw (and met) some of the great entertainers of that era. I don't know what part you was living in Ernie (I lived in Hendon where Raich Carter was born) but you must have resided under a rock somewhere if you thought they were 13,000 miles from civilization.

I remember singing Hurley is a Charlie from the south stand one time when we played Blunderland. I think the pitch was frozen and he wore basketball shoes. As I recall, he manhandalled and was all over Chilton, who never got a look in.
