Having studied both human evolution and 19th and 20th century racial classification systems, including the work of H F K Gunther which the Nazis based a lot of their appalling ideas on, I would agree that the term Caucasian is problematic. Partly because its inaccurate, partly because people use it incorrectly (it doesn't just relate to Europeans), but mainly because our understanding of human development has improved enormously since the term was first used.

The press do tend to make a bigger deal out of things than they really are, don't they? I don't know why they do it because it doesn't make life any better for anyone.

I think human evolution is fascinating but I also often think that some of it is going to upset people. Especially in this current climate where people seem so quick to be offended by stuff. So, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some element of wanting to use terms, across the board, that are less associated with those old fashioned (and definitely racist) ideas.

I worked in Croydon for 7 years and it's not a bad place, but not particularly attractive. Very mixed population and everyone gets on pretty well.

This is largely an issue within the young, black, male community. Very tribal with gang affiliation among some, and that spills over to the others. You're bang on about these "community leaders" though. Stop pontificating in the media and get with these kids to show them the effects of knife crime on families and friends.

Always playing the victim card, some people, which is simply a way of ducking any form of responsibility.

Whichever terms are used someone will be offended tbh, continually analysing everything will make matters worse imo. If I chose I could be offended at people calling me a Brit, a Geordie or an Exile but as long as those people aren't being deliberately offensive they can call me anything they like. Continually correcting people isn't being tolerant, it's often being unnecessarily pedantic and obtuse.

Stating that you are fed up with something being rammed down your neck is the right of a citizen to voice their opinion, the same as it would be to moan about the amount of reality T.V. shows or the North-South Divide.

Just because what your missus is complaining about is regarding a certain 'movement', it doesn't make her a racist, although the do-gooders and wooly hat brigade might argue otherwise.

I was a member of the Anti-Nazi League when I was younger, so I despise racism, but I too am sick of programmes ramming BLM and LGBT down your neck in the name of Political Correctness.

The best way to deal with racism is not to focus on the campaigners, but shame the perpetrators, whilst actively encouraging all sides of the community to come together. The best people to do this, as you previously mentioned, are community elders and religious leaders from all faiths.

I would agree with the part in bold. However, scientific terms should be altered when they are scientifically incorrect. Some terms that are used in studies of human evolution/classification originated in theories that were not only inaccurate but inherently and deliberately racist.

You do have to be careful not to complicate something that 'needs clarifying' though.

I'm absolutely lost at what to call anyone with any kind of physical 'issue' these days. I had a really irate woman, in a shop, rail into me because I'd called her daughter 'disabled'. The poor lass was in a wheelchair with one of those metal head clamps ffs ...

something like 5 years in prison for anyone caught with a knife in public and 7 years for a gun (both with no parole) and a life sentence for being involved in any killing where one of these weapons is used (including aiding & abetting or attempting to pervert the course of justice by hiding or failing to give evidence) is the only way we will ever defeat this type of crime.

A friend of mine, a retired probation officer.

Once said, the idea that prison does not work ie as a deterrent is only part of the story
Those that committ crime are often repeat offenders and have been to prison before, so yes going to prison hasn't changed their behaviour. However it is only a small minority who are repeat offenders, so catching them and locking them up for longer does reduce the amount of crimes they can perpetrate. Thereby reducing the total amount of crime.

In that way prison does work.
