On the whole 'patriotism' debate, not everyone is a big tribalist and they should be respected too, so it works both ways. We live in more of a global world now as well. And I'm certainly not proud of everything that comes from Britain just for the sake of a political concept. Also I think sports people play for their own pride and wages first and foremost. The reason they want to get in the national team is because it's their own individual recognition.
Can't be arsed to read back but if you're on about the monarchy, the queen still has certain powers doesn't she? Can't she remove a pm, declare war and do a few other bits and bobs. Don't new laws and wars have to be countersigned by her too?
Don’t agree. We live in a more connected global world yes but that doesn’t have to negate national pride. Competitiveness and patriotism is still there for all to see during the Olympics and the World Cup. Do these South American countries currently putting on fantastic displays of patriotic fervour out in Brazil have to suffer disgusting liberals like you denouncing their patriotism like we do here?
I didn't denounce 'patriotism', I said that there are valid alternative opinions which shouldn't be denounced blindly.
Like that bloke in in N Korea or Raul Castro? Anything which means we will not have a President Prescott or similar is a good thing.
Putin's a despot but the Russian people love him, the US also creates puppet regimes whenever it feels like it. The Philippines, Korea and Vietnam spring to mind.
