We had some players in the Reid heyday, ****ing joy to watch, even if we shipped a few.

All that you’ve mentioned plus folk like Bould for a short while and Schwarz, they were genuine players.

I always say the killer was losing Hutch though, we’d started a transition and he was the key to it all. Yeah he asked for a fortune but he was the epitome of a team hub. I knew when he went we were in trouble.
Start of the downfall when Hutch went. Though I think Reyna was a great buy, he was just made of celery.

As usual you make great points but can I say in defence of Kevin Philips he loyally stood by Peter Reid, to long for his own good really , but whether this had anything to do with Sunderland is not clear, but he was not busting a gut to leave as you infer. Having said that I fully agree with your arguments, I do not want him back as manager,or any dour hard man type either, its a different ball game these days. The influx of foreign players, ideas and fitness levels blew them and their drinking culture, completely out of the water
Even though something needed to be done, I do not envy SD's task and am puzzled by it tbh, it all seems a bit knee jerk rather than well considered. <ok>

He certainly didn't bust a gut once he'd decided to leave! That said he was a great striker and put in an excellent stint here until then but that doesn't make him the man for the job afaic.

Correct me if I've got this wrong, but I'm sure I remember a SKP interview where he said that in his last year he ''had no appetite for a relegation fight, and when the move came couldn't get down the motorway fast enough'' Obviously could have been misquoted/misinterpreted.

Fits in with what I saw at the time

Bould played 21 games and rarely saw out a full game that season. He was finished.
Schwarz fell out of favour for quite a while also. Neither of them were the legends people make out. I believe it was because they had been big names and came to us.
Another paraphrase...the first casualty of reminiscing are the facts

Your facts re Bould may be correct but there was no doubt that he was a massively positive influence here. I'd be inclined to agree with you re Schwarz

I'm starting to think I'll be disappointed if it's not Stendel - which is a bit weird as I'd never heard of him before Tuesday!
Probably just as weird that you hadn't heard of him considering that he was the manager of one of the teams that beat us to promotion.

Wouldn't want SKP I'm afraid - has all the makings of Shearer at the Mags. He might be alright or even great but no evidence to support it and we can't afford a mistake.
Timing of stuff with Strendel(Sp) seems like it might be more than a co-incidence. He leaves on Monday, we sack Jack on Tuesday even though nothing's changed at the club since we lost to Lincoln.
Didn't see us play Barnsley so just going on what others have said about his style of play but he certainly has experience of success in this division
Stendel for me all day long, Barnsley fans were devastated to lose him...super Kev as head coach and particularly striker coach, Grigg would do well with him here....hopefully

Aye, those expectations are a bu**er like.

We played a lot better stuff with Reidy.
He spent less than others but promised big wages for several players and had gone before they were due to be paid(not saying that's his fault)
Some of his signings hung over us like a cloud for a good while.

A lot of Jack's supposed faults were a case of "give a dog a bad name then hang him for it". For chokers we certainly were good at winning from losing positions. As far as the chance he blew the fans decided he was the problem in spite of it being apparent that the recruitment team were not getting the players we needed.

All that said I would be happy to have Sam back and realise that Ross had to go for the sake of the atmosphere, just trying for a bit of balance in the overview
You're correct saying the recruitment was lazy and clueless, didn't Ross have the final say ?

We need some tough sod to whip the soft lads into shape don't we. Fitness has been a failing of the Ross regime.
The fitness issue has been picked up by several posters, me included, why are a majority blowing out of their arses after an hour ? Nothing should be left on the pitch, could it be weak mentality?

I agree, I think he might go on to be a top manager. We are stale and his style is exactly what we need to get us playing attacking football and to excite the crowd again.
It would be a no brainer for me, he's available, he's free, he's got the experience, he's taken Barnsley up from this ****ty league, and he likes a pint :)

Probably just as weird that you hadn't heard of him considering that he was the manager of one of the teams that beat us to promotion.

That was my point really and probably indicative of my level of interest in any club other than Sunderland. This recruitment is certainly expanding my knowledge of lower league managers(probably only temporary knowledge) - I even know that Ainsworth manages Wycombe(and hopefully he continues to do so)
