It's funny how short the collective memory is. Well into the 50s, if not later, British clubs had Managers or Secretary Managers whose job was administrating the team(s), dealing with transfers etc. In effect, they were a bit like a Director of Football. Coaching and preparing the team was carried out by the Head Coach. Managers who got involved in coaching were a rarity and it was from them that the term 'Tracksuit Manager' was coined. Things are just going full circle. The only difference being that, in Britain, there was no tactical thought involved as everyone was wedded to the WM.
