What I'm saying is the odds had them finishing in the playoffs, mostly 4th or 5th, bookmakers are in the business of extracting as much cash as possible from punters so however they compile their metrics will be as thorough as their Switzerland/Barbados based CEO demands it to be.
Under that metric, which is the best one available, they exceeded expectations by finishing 2nd and getting automatic promotion, avoiding the lottery of the playoffs.
Perhaps we are quibbling over the weight of the term "exceeding", I'm not saying they were expected to be battling relegation and beat untold odds to fire themselves into 2nd, I'm saying they beat the margins, which is what success is about 99% of the time.
