Just explained the situation to the Mrs who is a psychologist. She's very much of the opinion that if he's even half aware of the negativity it will have a massive impact on him. After that depends on his character. Growth mindset or fixed mindset.

I'm not a psychologist and pointed out how much he will probably be getting paid, what he must be expecting joining a club like Sunderland and how if he's worth his salt it should drive him on.

Apparently it doesn't work like that, time will tell :emoticon-0158-time:

The negativity definitely plays a part. Just like momentum works forwards too. It can become a self fulfilling prophecy in many ways.

Quite why so many Sunderland fans are creating an environment that will improve the likelihood of failure is beyond me. Because we've only had 1 promotion in 2 years and not 2? Because we've got a chance of a second promotion through the playoffs but some think we should take it automatically? Because we're not spending so much money that we have to worry about FFP?

There's an awful culture of entitlement that exists these days and unfortunately we're no different. I thought our fans might be grateful for just a little while longer.

Welcome and good luck Mr Beale

By all accounts a good coach, which is what we're looking for. As far as I can see, he had a 41% win rate at QPR, 70 at Rangers. Mowbray had a 40% win rate with us, and his career highest is 51% with Celtic.

Dodds as assistant head coach is great as well. Will give Beale the insight he needs into the squad, and Dodds is heading in the right direction in becoming head coach

It's definitely not any worse an appointment then an unknown Swedish manager with no experience in the English game.

Potter would have been a wow appointment, but never likely to happen and I never took the links seriously

W Still ? Obviously highly thought of, but sounded like he would have wanted a decisive say in recruitment and transfers. That's a no go with our current setup.

Overall, I'm happy to sit back, enjoy and see what happens.

How does that theory balance against his record though? That tends to be a phrase to throw at someone who draws too many games, but Beale won 31 of 43 at Rangers and only drew 4.

It doesn’t really, I don’t understand it myself. Their data from last season is very similar to Celtics, they actually had quite a more shots per 90 over the course of the season.

In the league last season - which he only lost 2 times against Aberdeen and Celtic after taking over at the end of November. He picked up 59 points from 69 available.

4 other losses were 2 cup finals to Celtic, 1 CL game and 1 Europa. 2 this season in league I think.

Bang on.

I think you're right, mate. However, you can't have the smooth without the rough. We are the best and the worst fans. That's passion and it's why we get 40k plus attendances.

I've not enjoyed this board castigating fans for voicing their honestly held opinions, recently. MB might be the best thing that has ever happened to the club...but I 100% understand why folk have concerns.

Love this board, but I think on occasion it tends towards contrarianism. We all love the club. Just because the majority aren't on board with a given decision... doesn't mean this board is right.
Or wrong of course.

Saturday will be fine - the fans in the ground will get behind the team as per usual.

Beale has strong coaching credentials with a recent blip as a manager. Lets face it, if he was a world class coach with an unblemished managerial record he would be nowhere near us.

The appointment could be similar to some of the players we have signed in the last couple of years.....lost their way a bit but with lots of upside in the right environment.

Does the appointment show that we are just a development club these days, whether that be players or managers?
We’ll bring people in develop them and send them on their way!
So competing at the top level is a million miles away!

We are a million miles away from competing at the top financially (there are teams owned by oil rich states in the Premier league ffs). We can never hope to compete at the top any other way than being a developing club buy players develop them into better which benefits the team on the pitch initially, then when they are sold it helps financially enabling us to buy a better starting level to develop.

Also buying players and allowing them to move on when they have improved to the point the big clubs come calling means more players will see us as an attractive club to be at for their progression!

Said this earlier. The Clarke of the coaching world. Hopefully now he's in the right place at the right time.

What the ****? This is mad. I think it’s been a ridiculous overreaction from our fans even if he was the crappest coach going but the more I read and the more I look at his record the more I realise he’s not even crap at all, not even a little bit.

Agree and apart from a the select few clubs, pretty much every other club is a selling/feeder/development club to some degree.

I don't get why people are suspicious of us buying players for nominal sums then working to increase their value (whether we sell them or not). Is it better to pay 10m for the likes of Jack Rodwell just to show that we are 'ambitious'?

I’m looking forward with optimism. I know a lot (maybe even the majority) of people on here don’t want Beal, but what do we know? The majority aren’t always right. I remember way back in the 60s when Sunderland were looking for a new manager. In the pub at lunchtime, as usual, various names were being suggested. I suggested Clough because he was doing good things at Hartlepool at the time, but my idea was dismissed without consideration because he didn’t have much experience! As I’ve just said - what do we know?
