Just a gut feeling but I think Mike Dodds is going to continue to play a hugely important role - maybe even exceeding the role of a typical "assistant manager".

Just from the wording and everything we know about the way the club operates. I just see Beale and Dodds working very much together. Beale obviously gets final say. But I think this will be different to a normal Manager / Assistant type relationship.

Just a gut feel.

Beale told QPR fans that loyalty means a lot when he knocked back the Wolves job, then joined Rangers about a month later.

Rangers were struggling last season under Gio Van Bronkhurst and Beale was in the stands at one of his final games which heaped pressure on Gio, who is a Rangers legend from his spell playing for us, then getting us to within a penalty kick of winning the Europa league.

Beale took over and had a great spell of wins, but we lost every game that mattered, and he was up against Fat Ange's Celtic side who were utterly relentless, swatting away all the Scotch sides.

Up until this season, Beale had the best win % of any manager in Scotch football history, but his signings in the close season have been truly awful, Jack Butland aside. Rangers got rid of 5 of our top scorers during the close season and replaced them with guys who had poor goal return stats already, so God knows what Beale saw in them.

This season under Beale, there looked like there was issues even during close season where we were dreadful to watch. He got us through to the CL play off versus PSV. We drew 2-2 at Ibrox but get raped in Eindhoven (PSV are having a great season). In the league, we started off the season with a visit to Kilmarnock, he rested one of our best players in Cantwell, and we got beat, we then lost to Celtic at Ibrox (another game that mattered) and then to Aberdeen at home too which meant that we lost 3 out of 7 league games, and we were really poor to watch.

Plus for this season was we beat Real Betis in the Europa but he left before any more EL games.

Beale was a great coach and had a genuine affinity to our Club from his spell as Sneaky G's coaching staff, it was a shame that it didn't work out for us.I remain sceptical if he is actually able to head up as a manager but wish him and you all the best for the rest of the season.

Good luck
@Sheds

The meltdown over beale just reinforces my view that most fans are blinkered and lacking in any real idea how footy works. They make up their mind on someone based on very little. With beale they base it on a few bad months at rangers. Hope he does well and shuts up the morons in our fanbase.
Others may call you a moron for your willingness to accept such an uninspiring appointment.

I hope he does well anarl, coz at the end of the day I love SAFC 1st & foremost.

it’s a forum and everyone is entitled to their opinion without being bad-mouthed.

One of the reasons I love Sunderland is because I love Sunderland fans. I've never lived north of Birmingham. Only supported Sunderland in first place when my Durham-born mum took me to a game and I was just blown away by the supporters. Even this weekend when I went to the game, I just love being around passionate, down to earth fans. Its great.

Then I look at the replies on twitter and it makes me embarrassed to be a Sunderland fan. I have never seen fans of other clubs react like this to an appointment and it makes me really quite sad.

Beale wouldn't have been my choice, definitely not. But the thing causing me much more disappointment is the reaction, often incredibly rude and hurtful, that I'm seeing to his appointment. And then Sunderland fans even then being disrespectful to other Sunderland fans, for daring to try to be positive about it. WTAF

Remember SA, that twaterers, and other Internet obsessives amount to a small and profoundly unrepresentative sample of the full body.

Many of them won't go, some would winge if we won the Cup but only 1-0 instead of 2-0, and some will be mags, many of whom have rather empty lives.

You are right... but on Saturday the only mention of Michael Beale I heard all day was in the toilets with one bloke saying "aye that Micky Beale can **** right off". Just one guy for sure, but its not JUST on twitter. There's an undercurrent of people that are against it I think purely because of who he isn't rather than who he is.

Crack on then lad. All supporters will get behind you, though some people might not.

I'm very pleased that those in charge made their minds up and stuck with it. Going back on a decision because some people get upset on the Internet would have been absurd and laughable.
Mind it still is absurd and laughable <laugh>

This is one of the most underwhelming appointments they could have made at this point, imo.

Hope he gets results obviously but this whole process disproves the having a plan and someone lined up stuff Speakman blabbed on about last year.

Actually a bit concerned how this will go short term, personally.

No it doesn't. Having a plan and then being able to bring in the exact person you want are two seperate things. And Speakman literally says in his statement that he's been tracking Beale for a long time.

Two other clubs sacked their managers around the time we sacked Mowbray, and they havent appointed yet. So its also incorrect to think this appointment took a disproportionately long time.

Suprised he isnt bringing any of his previous staff with him.

You would have assumed he was bringing at least his assistant, but with Dodds being promoted then there wasn't a role.

We all need to give him time to implement his ideas

Yeah me too. I think a load are. Its rare you see such vitriol across all forms of media, multiple platforms. Mostly saying the same thing, poor appointment and wont last the contract length.

really hope he proves us wrong and is a success but, its really hard to see so many unbiased reports saying this is a poor appointment and will wear thin quickly.
