Very sad news. Wish him the best in the future. Hopefully he’s given a coaching role at Spurs (or here). He came across really well on The Debate earlier this season if he chooses a punditry route. Looks an ideal candidate for a pundit at the World Cup for either BBC or ITV.
Gutted for Ryan but if it was going to happen at least it happened here under this regime and he can take comfort knowing he's cost that family over £10m and they won't have a thing to show for it.
I'm sure he'll do well in the future, I have no worries about that. Moneywise he should be ok, the problem is trying to adjust to not playing, but he's had a long time to think about what he could do and adjust to that now anyway.
I would not have enjoyed seeing Ryan put himself at risk on the pitch.this is the best decision for him and his family.i hope he goes on to achieve success in an other area of the game.
Ususly there’s an insurance payout to us to the value of his contract. It won’t recoup the money paid but it’s better than nothing. I’ll bet that was an almightily tough decision from Ryan, but hopefully he will stick around and help in the dressing room with morale.
Do we know that though? I know they're mentioned often but I've heard people say that insurance for footballers is and isn't a thing. Not sure which is true.
It is indeed very sketchy and, even if a club has it, what they get in return differs greatly. I suspect we’ll never know what we got, if anything, as even if the club announces it then due to past lies we won’t believe them,
Duffen spread a lot of light over player insurance and said it was indeed very rare as it was far too costly to be feasible to cover anything worthwhile.
A career ending injury is covered by the PFA, they have cover on all professional footballers. I think there's also a requirement for all clubs to insure their players now, but I think it's fairly basic cover (can't remember where I read this), they also have to have private medical insurance paid for by the club. No idea if there's any insurance to cover the club's costs.
Terrible .. Hope he can find something he enjoys doing as much as playing footy. Good luck for the future . ---------- **** can happen to anyone at anytime so make sure you all have as good a day as possible everyday .
Chelsea FC @ChelseaFC Everybody at Chelsea Football Club sends our best wishes to Ryan Mason following his retirement. Good luck in whatever you choose to do next, Ryan.
Irrespective of the cost of his transfer, he must be one of the biggest earners, so whether or not we carry on paying that wage seems significant too.
I think it covers his wages until his contract expires and we get a payout on whatever playing time he had left.
Yep, should have given a foul against Arsenal, whoever they were playing that day, just because they are Arsenal. But then also sent off Cahill. Of course it wasn't premeditated, but I still maintain it was a badly timed, reckless leap by and contact ('assault') from Cahill. He went recklessly flying into Mason, eyes closed. Shouldn't matter whether it's on the ground or in the air, it was a really bad challenge that went totally unpunished. That can't be right. Of course, it pales into insignificance in comparison to Mason's resulting injury and retirement, but still it cost us very dear (effect on that game, possibly even our relegation and something approaching £20m lost (transfer fee, wages, treatment)).
Might be a daft question but why didn’t it hurt Arsenal’s Cahill as much? Is the forehead that much harder than where it hit Mason? Was it his temple area? I don’t mean anything by it, just you’d assume both would be really hurt.
