Each time I open this site I get an alarm from Avast -

I doubt I will be much help, as I don't bother with software like that, just bogs my PC down.

Are you viewing the site when logged out? As guests see adverts, so could be the advert that is the cause, but if your always logged in, then thats that idea out of the window.
 
Never use free AV software, it is free for a reason. Whilst I don't conduct the tests it is sort of in my job to know about them, the free anti-virus software available is always a few years behind what you would pay an annual subscription for. And when it comes to which software you should use there are only two that can be highly recommended: Kaspersky and BitDefender.

You will want the full security suites.

Once either of these are purchased and installed ensure the settings are set to "Aggressive" and then go ahead and visit the site even if it is somewhat dodgy and has some malware embedded into it. FYI... I am going to that site to check it out and see if it is just a false positive.
 
McAfee is terrible and DOES clog your PC down.

I don't agree with Project one bit. Avast is free and is excellent. There's also a version you can buy which gives you more features. Used it for donkey's years when on a PC after it was recommended to me by a mate in IT (he's actually head of IT for a major company).

Btw - try seeing the light and getting a MAC. Bye bye malware and viruses. Yes, both can still be a threat but it's easier to protect and there are less out there - a lot less. Used one for 5 years straight without replacing a bit of hardware. An outstanding bit of kit that's built to last. Anything running windows has a deliberate built-in shelf life and I vowed I will never use one again. My wife has gone through 3 windows laptops in the same period.

That said, a friend is a lecturer in IT at Swansea Uni and hates MACS but she's real old school bless her. Speak as you find I guess.

Don't worry I've had some virus warnings on this not606 site over the years, sometimes they are a false positive, and even the best security systems you buy, will throw up these false positives, quite often there is no virus whatsoever, if you are worried then download Malwarebytes, and update the definitions once installed and run a scan, it will find everything!................<ok>

You don't have to agree but no business in the world would build a system from Apple's technology because it is massively insecure. And indepdent testing by Pen Testers have shown Avast is like a sieve which let's all sorts of malicious applications through with almost no resistance.

For the home there is only two reasonable combinations for any thing resembling decent security and that is Kaspersky\BitDefnder with Windows 8.1 Pro.

It took me less than a minute to break into a colleagues Mac over a network and plant my own virus written in notepad, I gained full level admin and just had text file auto generate on his desktop to prove a point, it was funny seeing his face go white <laugh>

PS. We are recruiting and we will train you so there is hope yet for you <cheers>
 
I have a pretty poor opinion of it, but it's enterprise edition is very good... Same with McAfee. They are both poor at the home user level but very good at the corporate level for protection.

I detest everything Apple. They're a walled garden and just as bad as Microsoft in that respect. Plus Apple are the biggest patent trolls on the planet.

If anyone's using their computer for everyday tasks then just install a noob friendly Linux distro and say goodbye to all the incredible amount of crap associated with Windows. Even if you're dependent on MS Office then the cloud version works in any browser. Saying that the installation may still be too intimidating for some but you can always try it in a VM like VirtualBox first with no danger.

All the computers in my house run Arch Linux but this isn't noob friendly!
 
Love Apple everything!! Why? I don't have to buy another device for years after leaving the shop. End of story. If you have moral objections then don't buy anything Apple, Sony or Microsoft because they're all very protective of their stuff. Yes, overly so. I don't give a **** provided it works, is efficent and lasts! Apple ticks all the boxes for me.

Project - I didn't profess to be an expert and never have. You clearly are and that's why you were able to plant a virus on your mate's MAC. A lot of Mac users are blase about security but I'm not and use protection (be safe, kids).

As an expert you should know that no system is impenetrable but Avast does the business for most home users - check the links above for the reviews that prove it. On the Download.com site they had about 24,000 reviews and over 20,000 gave it four or five stars which tells you something.

I think most people know what works or what doesn't for them and it's been brilliant for me for years and has never 'leaked like a seive' though I don't dispute the research. Norton on the other hand <doh> Big, clunky and causes other issues - wouldn't touch it at all. My mate's emplyers are a larger retail outlet and they won't touch it either. They use the purchased version of Avast and have done so for many years wthout a problem, though if an expert put their mind to it I'm sure it could be beaten. They stopped using Kapersky but I'm not sure why.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.
 
I don't get into technological advocacy (much!), people should use whatever they want, what works for them, like yourself Dragon.

I will say though, if you have a little nous then do experiment. You might be very pleasantly surprised by the alternatives available.

As to the OP - Keith, I get a "not found" for that URL.
 
You're right, Dai. But I think if people come across something that works they'll stick with it. I actually use a custom built Windows (ugh) PC for gaming because I find MACS not so good at that. Also use it for football streaming (legally of course <whistle>) so if any nasties do get past Avast it's not on my main workstation. Hasn't happened yet touch wood.

Unfortunately reviews like these should be taken with a pinch of salt. I could write a review of how having no anti virus software is fantastic, after all I haven't had one installed for years, and have never had a problem, doesn't make it a great idea for everyone though, nor does my review to say its great mean its safe or the best option out there. Point is, any tom dick or harry can write a review, whether they know what they are actually talking about when writing those reviews is a different kettle of fish. Especially where AV software is concerned.

Me personally when I did have an AV software, I was using Kaspersky. McAfee in my honest opinion is utter ****, as is Norton.
 
Take your point swanselona but there were 25,000 people who took the time and made the effort to comment on the product. Not an insignificant sample.
