Take care - have used Macs for years but have recently been infected by an adware and malware. I think both arrived via links from 'http://www.newsnow.co.uk'.
Not many, and though I have built hundreds over the years, and repaired many more, and spent years on software and hardware diagnostics, I think Linux is giving Microsoft a pasting, Android is king of the mobile and tablet world, and is Linux, Apple Mac OSX is Linux though locked down by apple, and the many Linux distro's cater for all tastes, I prefer Ubuntu myself, but all these are eating into Microsoft windows. Then you have Microsoft shooting themselves in the foot with windows 8, and the inept metro tiles designed specifically for touch screen bolted onto desktops? I've lost count on the number of folk who have asked me to reverse engineer their windows startmenu back to windows 8 machines, and then there is the huge waste of space that the metro tiles takes up, I have seen machines with 25 Gig used just for these stupid tiles? Anyway the current machine I'm using is quad boot environment with Win 7/ Win8.1 test (revers Engineered, variant), Ubuntu and OSX86. I no longer build machines, there is no point when you can buy the same spec so cheap these days, if I wanted a gaming machine then maybe I would, but I'm no gamer. I think most people are still in love with the PC or Laptop, but are fed up with the direction windows is going, and I see many moving over to OSX, I must admit that I think Apple have a special product here that has stood the test of time, and while it's not bullet proof, it's far better than most windows machines, though the security in windows 8 is at last good, anyway I'm happy with the competition in the OS market, and glad that Microsoft Monopoly is fading...............
Like I said, I personally find the PC is king for gaming (I've a home-built one for that) but MAC is best for business. That's my conclusion anyway but I'm sure many disagree.
I just use Microsoft Security Essentials which was then incorporated in Win 7 onwards. It's free, good, compatible and doesn't clog up your machine. I know nothing of Macs
If you're in any way competent there's the option of installing Linux for free and saving yourself £1200. Plus no malware problems. If you still have the laptop then give it a try, you'll have a spare laptop in perfect working order at least. I have a circa 2008 Asus EeePC 701 running Arch Linux in my daughter's bedroom, plays all her media etc and it runs perfectly. I never had you down as geek Phil Well done on using Ubuntu, although I'm not happy with them starting their own display server, Mir. I suspect they're doing that to get into the mobile market though (even though they have no chance).

Yes, I have a Mac and a malware warning popped up tonight when trying to get on not606. First time I've ever had a warning going on to any site in 2 years. Kept pressing 'Ignore' as I'm always desperate to see what you guys are saying, lol
Kieth you need to give your PC a thorough scan for viruses mate if you are still getting issues. What did MalwareBytes find?
I got the same thing today, I have however just completed a fresh install, so could be that who knows.
Funny enough I had problems with it last night. Haven't used the PC today to see if the sand problem arises.
Never mind guys, Windows 9 will soon be here. Catching up with another OS! http://ow.ly/BF2W6 But I daresay that the "windows" will still be open!!!!!
The malware alarm from Google has now disappeared for this site. I was also able to get rid of a pop up yesterday that had been plaguing my computer for months. It was "status.msi" that kept on trying to install on my computer and failing. The pop up would keep on flashing on the screen and I would keep on cancelling and it was driving me crazy. Anyway I had a brainwave and googled "status.msi",and amongst other links up came the HP Support forum with several people having the same problem. Apparently it was my printer, and the advice to fix it was to uninstall HP Photosmart altogether and reinstall the printer software anew. Abracadabra the problem was fixed! I had no idea it was the printer and it's HP software updates that had caused this problem.
DragonPhilJack - maybe I didn't write it clearly enough, but they were both separate problems, neither was associated with the other. I had the status.msi problem for months, the malware alarm for this site was in the last week and only on this site.
