I Understand, maybe I didn't read you post correctly, anyway if you have an '.msi' problem next time, it's usually caused either through a bad install or uninstall which leaves some installation 'msi' 's left after a bad uninstall or the 'msi is corrupted on installation through disc read error, or bad packet download. Microsoft have a clean up tool which removes these 'msi' issues, the tool is called 'Windows installer clean up tool', just google it, and download it from Microsoft!.................<ok>

Thanks for the advice, better than the ComputerActive Forum!
My netbook runs with XP,so no support from MS,and when I went to their site and selected Windows XP operating system,I got the message "The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (MSICUU2.exe) is no longer available from Microsoft".
I don't really need it at the moment anyway, now that the problem is solved, touch wood.
One thing's for sure I won't be okaying the persistent update requests from HP anymore,as that's what started my problem in the first place.

Keith, Microsoft Security Essentials would work on XP. Personally I hate pre-installed anti-virus stuff and try and do a clean install straight away if possible.

You are vulnerable using WinXp, so my advice to you is to install 'Norton Internet security' or Kaspersky Internet Security 2015, and Malwarebytes. The 'Windows Installer Cleanup Tool' can be downloaded from the 'Majorgeeks' link below.

    Link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/windows_installer_cleanup_utility.html

If your not sure which internet security to choose, you can run a full trail of Norton or Kaspersky, both companies do a full program Trial of 30-90 days with no restrictions whatsoever, My preference is Norton as it is more user friendly.

Kaspersky 30 Day Trail Link: http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/free-trials/internet-security

Norton 30 Day Trial Link: http://uk.norton.com/downloads-trial-norton-internet-security

Norton 180 day Trial Link: http://www.geckoandfly.com/9661/download-free-norton-internet-security-2012-antivirus-90-days/

You can also purchase OEM versions of Norton Internet Security for a full 12 months from ebay Symantec licenced sellers, they usually cost around £10.00 for the licence key, or disc, Link Below.................<ok>
