The Reubens don't need to bully the council like Sir John tried, they already have a cosy relationship with the planning and development departments, having worked closely with them on the purchase of The Monument Mall, and large parts of Pilgrim Street / Grainger Town sites. As well as owning huge tracts of land around Northumberland, Newcastle and Sunderland dog tracks ( don't know why) they are pretty much first in the queue when anything interesting comes up around Newcastle. So they must have/ have had a plan for St.James site, and I still reckon they were ready to propose a new stadium site ( which they presumably already own) to the Arabs , and take the existing stadium site into their portfolio, for their future plans. ( The demolition and return to a 'flat site' you talk about won't even bother them, it'll be all factored into the redevelopment costs) I guarantee that they've already had talks with town planners off the record about all of this, and if they've parked this proposal ( with the Arabs) it's because it doesn't include any of their interests.....as you say they are not interested in owning a football club, or they could have done this by themselves. Incidentally, the Reuben Brothers as such are probably not involved at all, they are both very old, very rich, and very much too long in tooth for this messy deal, but the younger siblings who will inherit the business are busy trying to put their own stamp on the property world, so anything is possible, but they have much bigger fish to fry than Mike Ashley's little club, and I think all the negativity around the deal will make them move on to different things, too messy to bother with, and their efforts will be more profitable elsewhere. NUFC is very much small fry to them, it'll be on the back burner for now I'm sure.
They, the Reuben Brothers, have spent around 1.9 billion on European property in the last 5 years - which takes their Newcastle allocation to around 2%. Their interests are firmly in London and the south east, plus some holiday property in Spain, Italy, Greece and Switzerland from what I can make out.
Reflects your point entirely......Bigg Market, Small Fry
