Mike Oldfield was born in Reading and Sally Oldfield was born in Dublin. She's also 6 years older than he is. There is also a middle Brother called Terry apparently.

Ah ok - does Reading count as West Country? Probably not!

Lost Prophets were from Pontypridd and Watkins, the convicted paedo was from Merthyr.

Ha ha, it sure is !!
And it's interesting where some of the research takes you. Yesterday when we were talking about Canadian singers/bands, Gordon Lightfoot was mentioned. I thought oh yes he had a hit with Swing Your Daddy in the 1970's. But I was wrong. The person who had that hit was Jim Gilstrap. But I casually looked at his Wikipedia (yeah I know...!) page and if true, the amount of people he's written music for and played alongside is just mind boggling. These are just some of the famous A's.
Adele, Al Kooper, Al Jarreau, Amy Grant, Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, Art Garfunkel... staggering.
He's also done music for Disney films and also an episode of the Simpson and the song Testify.

Every day really is a school day !

Gordon Lightfoot sung one of my favourite songs ever - I absolutely love it. It’ll be a hard job to better this one:

I should have clarified it’s my favourite BALLAD. I won’t suggest they play this over the tannoy at Ashton Gate to hype the players and fans before a game!!!!!
It depends what mood you’re in.

Better off with something like Bomber by Motorhead or Let There Be Rock by AC/DC

It’s a shame on the rest of the band losing out on any royalty’s because no radio station will play their stuff again. And having someone like that ruining all their work.

Slightly different as in Lost Prophets was not long into their career whilst the Glitter Band was only doing Butlins

The Glitter Band under its current make up with just one original member (Pete Phipps one of the 2 drummers) were still touring last I heard although Gerry Shepherd (famous for his star shaped guitar on stuff like Angel Face and Goodbye My Love) died in 2003 and Mike Leander who wrote a lot of the hits for Gary Glitter, Rolling Stones, Marianne Faithful, Joe Cocker, Small Faces, Peter Frampton, Shirley Bassey and more died in 1996.

Cheers, think we’ve sidetracked this thread now, with me mentioning him and ruining everyone’s good mood.
Trying to think of another country other than us and the US to get back on with the thread.
    Let’s go German next.

Kraftwerk, Freiheit and Trio are the only ones I can think of from Germany that had hits in the UK.
During my trips to Germany, the most popular bands were Die Toten Hosen (the Dead Trousers) and Peter Maffay, but I doubt if many people outside Germany have heard of them.
I though of Opus - but I checked on Google and they’re Austrian.

Just remembered Klaus Wunderlich - Germany’s answer to James Last!

When I was in Germany with the wife back in 1990, one of the German exchange students was the daughter of a Scorpions band member. I can’t remember which one though.

Nena of 99 Red Balloons fame.

Hmm, this is a bit like naming famous German comedians. Henning Wehn being the only one I can think of.

    BCFC, James Last was German.

Can only remember Klaus Mein and Rudolf Schenker. I saw them on the Blackout tour in Colston Hall. Also saw Michael Schenker who I think was in Scorpion for a bit. Going to google it to find that bit out
