If/when Greaves goes we probably should sign a more experienced centre-back but not as a direct replacement for Greaves. If we’re following the Brighton/Brentford model of selling our youngish talent with lots of potential for big money, we should be signing similar players who also have resale value as replacements. Selling Greaves and signing a 31-year-old on a two-year deal isn’t really sustainable. The obvious replacement for Greaves would be someone like Cashin who is also early 20s, highly-rated etc.
When Brighton sold Caicedo, they signed Baleba as a long-term replacement. We should follow this business model also. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t sign older, experienced players, just not as long-term direct replacements for our young talents that we sell.
