Some signing if they can get Giles over the line, I loved the suggestion on X about a song based on the Proclaimers 500 miles also.

We probably need a RB also as completion for Coyle as I think unfortunately Christie looks as if that last injury had curtailed his mobility, so likely to be gone come the summer.

Vinagre has played a lot in the premier league, Europa league, Portuguese top division and made appearances in the champions league but didn’t play here because he’s **** at defending.

With Philogene in front of him and Seri and Morton playing the deep midfield role he did not have much protection and the same will probably be true for Giles. If he’s another attacking full back that can’t defend he will presumably have the same problems giving away cheap goals.

The same reason Christie has had such a **** time on the opposite side this season. We leave our full backs exposed and they need to be solid defenders.

i can’t remember Vinagre ever giving away a cheap goal and when he did play was a stand out in a couple of massive away wins, top quality attacking full backs like Giles get you promoted in this division (see Robbo/Moses)

I agree but both attacking/poor defending full backs we have had in the team this season have struggled significantly with defending so another player that is more of the same is a bit of a concern. I’m all for attacking full backs and I liked Vinagre and would have liked to have seen him get more opportunities, but we just don’t give them enough protection to get forward and also need to be solid 1 on 1 defenders because quite often they are caught on their own as the last line of defence.

Vinagre gave away a few cheap goals and had a few horror moments.

What cheap goals did Vinagre give away? I watched him closely when he was on as I was making the point to a mate that he's an upgrade. He prevented more crosses coming into our box than anyone else I'd seen play there recently.

I could be wrong but I thought I read at the time that Metz have an obligation to buy in the summer with a fee already agreed.

So did I initially but I’ve also read it’s an option.

£2 million loan fee + £3 million option.

I don’t know much about him and judge when I see him play but I always think it’s a good sign if other teams want him. Let’s see if anything happens later today.

Talk of Giles’ inability to defend is, erm, a bit overstated. He does have an attacking mentality but it’s not like he’s incapable of tracking back or putting in a tackle. He’s a massive upgrade on Vinagre.

It has a whiff of generic football talk about it. An attacking full back who gets assists but can't defend is such a cliché that I can totally see it being significantly exaggerated. People used to say Robertson couldn't defend which was bollocks even before he improved at Liverpool. I think even with Vinagre his defensive weakness is exaggerated. If he could stay fit he'd be a decent player.

Vinagre is okay at defending. He was okay when he played. The problem that many of us predicted when we signed him was that he’s injury prone and like clockwork the usual people on here said ‘hurr durr where’s your coaching badges I trust Rosenior and the medical team more than you’.

Go figure.
