He needs a chance, but remember this is a player who didn’t do a great deal in the championship. That’s all I’m saying; a little caution.
Remember this is a player who played for a crap Championship side in a relegation dog fight surrounded by very poor players and a led by a rubbish manager. Even Ronaldo wouldn’t have done a great deal at Birmingham. He will get better service here.

Blackburn?

He was on loan at both blackburn and birmingham over the previous 2 seasons.
Looked decent at blackburn but struggled with brum

Yes, 12 goals for Blackburn and 7 for Birmingham(he was their top scorer)

Played regularly for both when fit

He might not have been my favourite player in recent years, but it doesn't mean I don't appreciate what he did for us under Adkins and Poch in helping to establish us as a PL side in his early years with us. Thank you for that. All the best SD.

Work with a Birmingham ST holder (and watcher of many European leagues) who really rated him as clearly a cut above in his time there. Said he was incredibly unlucky not to score more through lack of service as well as some worldy saves.

I’ve no idea if he is or isn’t the answer, but what I would say to anyone who thinks he definitely isn’t based on those two loan spells is why is he any different than any of our other young players? In that is potential not developable given the right manager and environment?

JWP for example is a year older, and with the greatest respect prior to the last game or two under a new manager (that seemingly suits his playing style) hadn’t really proved himself to be worthy as a regular PL starter. The kids just 2 years younger that we’re bringing through from U23’s are only tested at an even lower level than Sam’s loan experience in the Championship, yet some hold higher hopes for them. Harrison Reed is another, who is actually 8 months older than Sam, and some hold hopes for him based on similar loan experience in the Championship along with his style of play possibly suiting Ralph’s required style.

Is it possible that we’re just judging the lad (for or against) too early? I will accept that if he’s not getting game time by this time next season, with a more competent manager in charge, then he’s probably missed his window.

Equally though he was born the same year as PEH. The year before Bednarek. The year after Redmond, Ely and Hoedt. Putting their abilities (good or bad) aside, they're all first team squad players for us this season, They're not seen as youngsters. Gallagher might lack experience, but he's not a kid.

Personally I'm fine with giving him a go - I just don't think that we will. In which case I'm equally fine with letting him go. Loaning him out more I don't believe is the answer though. Play him or sell him.

I suppose in terms of our transfer window, the only thing Davis leaving does is frees up some wages and a squad space. Still could do with selling a few.

I’ve never said he shouldn’t be given the chance. My comment has always been that there are some fans seeming to put a lot of hope in him... imo
