Or it's a younger player and they need game time but can't move till their club has numbers in and could possibly have the same impact as Wilson and Campbel did...

If we replace one of our few experienced players with another kid, we're asking for trouble. I don't see why we couldn't keep Josh until we had a replacement sorted and in the building. We've left ourselves extremely short yet everyone else waits till they have enough numbers

They must be confident getting a replacement regardless of the sale.

Completely agree

After listening to grants interview I can understand why it's been done. It's a great move for Josh....he's going back home and has a 2.5yr deal. You won't see many of them these days

Who says we haven't?

Grant has said 2 players have been at the training ground this week to meet the players and he’s also had discussions with a PL striker but that one depends on the parent club getting one in.

So not quite as far as 'training with the squad' but I was right to interpret it as two players have been at the club.

Who says we haven't?

Listening to Grant's interview it certainly didn't seem that way. It seemed like we're waiting for a PL club to allow us to take a kid but they want one in first. We could easily be waiting until the last week of the window for that

The thing is they could be 2 kids or we could be waiting for the takeover to be finalised and it could be 2 decent players.

You're absolutely right but at the end of the day it's two players we are looking to sign (and I would think they're relevant enough to the first time as to why they've been mentioned), who could make a difference at Stoke. So why not get the Allams and Acun to agree that regardless we'll be signing those players especially now that Josh has gone?

Have a feeling at this point its quite difficult to sign players with them both agreeing to anything.. more than the Allams wouldn't want spend the fees that's been agreed for these players if it fails the EFL detail? and why would they.... I am obviously guessing here but seen as though it was free transfers and loans in summer and i cant see the Allams wanting different. The sale of Magennis wont hurt anything though....as its a plus in the bank. i guess time will tell.

Cant see it being formalised until next week myself now.

Yeah I said in the other thread, looks like late next week now which leaves things very tight. If we have any free transfers lined up (like the ex-Soton fella) I'd be trying to get them through the door regardless now.

Yeah i know what you mean. Is that a genuine signing though? I really thought that guy from Bursaspor was lined up until today. Not expecting any socks to be blown off. The January window is tough as it is. Fingers crossed as no news is good news apparently.

At a minimum I'd hope we start re-signing players like Honeyman.

We really do need to do some work on contracts. The entire squad are out of contract either this summer or next. Obviously there's the optional extra year on all of them, but we hardly ever actually take those up. If we're going to sort ourselves out on the playing side, this is one of the biggest things to address. The amount of quality we've lost on frees in the last few years is ridiculous.

We take them up quite often don't we? Only don't take them up on big money players we don't want. If it's players we want to keep we always take them up.

But yes I would hope over the next 6 months we see A LOT of re-signings on a well structured set of deals that don't all expire at the same time.

The bar for what is considered big money is incredibly low though, so we often end up releasing first team players, and by last summer we'd reached the point where we were releasing first teamers who'd been signed after we started paying some of the lowest wages in the division.

Hopefully we won't see another summer of that strategy. When we've had success before it's been with a settled squad built over a period of years and we need to get back to that.
