You also need a coach that can develop them. Not sure I get that from McCann - Wilks the main case in point.
He's got the ability, but just looks like he's left to do whatever he feels he wants to do. Often leading to poor decision making.
We were spoilt seeing Bowen develop, but once he got game time it was clear to see him grow into a well-rounded player who knew when was the time to take it on himself and when was the time to shoot.
If you count his time at Doncaster too, McCann has had Wilks for 2 and a half years and although he causes problems and gets goals, but he's still making the same mistakes he's always made.
I'm not knocking him/sagging him off, he's a good player and one of our best, even on a bad day. The frustration comes from the fact you can see there is a much better player in there if he was coached right.
I think sometimes we forget just how young Wilks still is. Decision making will get there but not overnight. He's only been with us a year.
I don't see Flores as being brought in as the striker option, more cover for the no 8 /10 or left hand side. I'd like to see a striker too, obviously so will assess the window when it shuts.
